(Official Synopsis)
In the mountains of Afghanistan, four members of SEAL Team 10 find themselves pinned down by insurgents. As their rescue helicopter is shot down, they are left to fight for survival in one of the most unforgiving landscapes on earth. Based on the true story of Marcus Luttrell and his fellow soldiers, this film showcases a tale of courage, sacrifice, and brotherhood.
In the year 2005, during their deployment in Afghanistan, Navy SEAL team members Marcus Luttrell (portrayed by Mark Wahlberg), Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) and Matthew “Axe” Axelson (Ben Foster) were tasked with a mission involving reconnaissance and eliminating Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. However, they chose not to harm some goatherds they encountered during their operation. Unfortunately, one of these Afghans alerted a band of Taliban fighters about the intruders, leading to a fierce and unequal engagement where the SEALs found themselves vastly overmatched in numbers and firepower.
Lone Survivor Is Now Considered One of Mark Wahlberg’s Best Movies
Upon hitting the screens, “Lone Survivor” garnered strong praise from critics, and even stronger acclaim from viewers. Today, this war film is widely regarded as one of Mark Wahlberg’s finest performances by many. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critical reception resulted in a rating of 75%, while audiences were more enthusiastic, giving “Lone Survivor” an impressive 87% on the Popcornmeter. The critics’ consensus summed up as, “A true depiction of military bravery and endurance, ‘Lone Survivor’ packs a punch with its raw intensity, capable of overpowering its occasional jingoistic overtones.
One significant factor contributing to the power of “Lone Survivor” is that its director, Peter Berg, worked closely with the real Marcus Luttrell, portrayed in the film by Mark Wahlberg. This movie, titled after Luttrell’s book, has been highly recommended by retired U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter pilot Chris Marvin, who feels it is important for every citizen to watch it at least once.
In this movie, Mr. Berg takes extra care to make it clear that the story being told is a real one. Consequently, the film contains intense scenes which might be hard to watch. Despite the discomfort, viewers are encouraged not to look away. This isn’t a work of fiction…Veterans who have served in Afghanistan will find the movie particularly impactful. After seeing it, Americans should depart from the theater feeling both enlightened and inspired.
Mark Wahlberg has a number of significant upcoming films in store, such as the crime-filled dramas “Play Dirty” and “By All Means,” as well as the action-packed comedies “Balls Up” and “The Family Plan 2.”
