As a gamer who spent countless hours immersed in Middle-earth during my formative years, I can relate to Hugo Weaving’s decision not to revisit the world of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. After all, one could argue that we both lived in Middle-earth for a significant part of our lives – me through games, and him through films.
Season 2 of “Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power” has arrived! However, unlike many fans, Hugo Weaving, an alumnus from Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” films, won’t be among them watching the prequel show. The 64-year-old British actor has a compelling reason for not re-entering the franchise as a viewer, and it seems quite rational.
Hugo Weaving portrayed Elrond, the half-elven bearer of one of Tolkien’s rings in five out of six Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” films (including the “Hobbit” trilogy). When asked if the actor is up to date with the series before its recent Season 2 debut, he responded as follows:
As a devoted fan, let me confess that I haven’t had the pleasure of witnessing the latest Middle-earth adventures yet, Robert [Aramayo]. Truth be told, my sojourn in Middle-earth was extended, and at this moment, I’m not yearning to return. New Zealand, however, has captured my heart once more, as I’ve just returned from a recent visit there.
In an interview with RadioTimes, Hugo Weaving, who previously portrayed Elrond, acknowledged Robert Aramayo as the new actor playing Elrond in “The Rings of Power,” although he himself is not watching the latest “Lord of the Rings” series. Weaving, who spent a decade embodying a significant character in Middle-Earth, expressed that the length of time invested feels too extensive for him personally.
However, yes, it’s amusing – when you invest such extensive effort on a single work, and in some sense… it’s a massive film, part of a significant franchise. Yet, in a quirky way, the role doesn’t carry the same grandeur in my mind as it might for fans. So, no, I must apologize to Robert, but I haven’t watched it yet. I’m confident he delivers an exceptional performance.

‘The Rings of Power’ Season 2 Interviews with Morfydd Clark, Charlie Vickers, Daniel Weyman & More
Throughout the 2000s, the British actor delved deeply into J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe, portraying a wise character that assisted in the struggle against Sauron for the One Ring – first in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and then in his The Hobbit series (ending in 2014). Although he is closely identified with this iconic role, Weaving has been content to leave Middle-earth behind. His latest character can be seen on Season 4 of Slow Horses, alongside Gary Oldman. This new season premieres next week exclusively on Apple TV+.
2020 saw Hugo Weaving being queried about potentially reprising his role as Elrond in “Rings of Power”. His response was that he had grown tired of it and definitively declined the offer, leaving room for Robert Aramayo to shine brilliantly portraying a younger version of the well-known “Lord of the Rings” character. This younger Elrond is also accompanied by a younger Galadriel, originally played by Cate Blanchett in the films, but Morfydd Clark took on this role for the Amazon series instead.
Hey there fellow gamer! You know, immersing oneself in Middle-earth’s magical realms isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Hugo Weaving’s mesmerizing portrayal as Elrond across five epic films continues to captivate us all. And let me tell you, it’s been a thrill witnessing Robert Aramayo breathe new life into this iconic role, now available for streaming with an Amazon Prime subscription!
