Lorne Michaels Reveals Taylor Swift’s Reaction to ‘SNL’ Spoofing Her 2015 Girl Squad

The 2015 group of friends surrounding Taylor Swift is still etched in memory, as well as her response to the Saturday Night Live sketch that mirrored this team, according to Lorne Michaels.

That particular year, the pop star gained a lot of attention due to her music video remix of “Bad Blood,” which included appearances by Kendrick Lamar and several notable celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Jessica Alba, Cindy Crawford, Gigi Hadid, Hayley Williams, Mariska Hargitay, and Lena Dunham. Many other high-profile stars also made appearances in the video.

After the video’s debut, “SNL” humorously imitated Swift’s famous girl group in two skits during season 41. One sketch, titled “The Squad,” depicted a post-apocalyptic world ruled by Swift and her friends. The narrator ominously declared, “In 2015, Taylor Swift formed her SQUAD. By the end of her tour, the entire world had joined.”

(I tried to preserve the same structure and tone while making it a bit more conversational.)

It appears that the singer known for “Fortnight” wasn’t overly enthusiastic about the upcoming sketch, as stated by Michaels. In a conversation with Vulture prior to the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special, the SNL creator revealed that Swift had reservations regarding the “The Squad” skit and reached out to him directly after being asked to participate in it.

Michael stated that Swift chose not to attend and requested the entire sketch be removed from the program, to which he replied, “Taylor, I don’t deal with blackmailers,” and promptly ended the call.

Following the broadcast of the sketch on NBC’s program, Michaels shared that Swift had sent him flowers accompanied by a message saying, “I wish for no hard feelings.

In the following season, another drawing emerged, entitled “Tina & Amy’s Cool Crew,” which was showcased on SNL. This presentation showcased Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reenacting the “Bad Blood” music video, while also including Aidy Bryant, Gayle King, and Amy Schumer in the mix.

Over the course of several years, the Grammy-winning singer has graced Saturday Night Live on multiple occasions. In 2009, she initially appeared as the musical guest, and then later in the same year, she took on the role of host for the sketch comedy show. Since then, she has made appearances in other episodes as well.
