As a die-hard fan who has followed the Lord of the Rings franchise since its inception, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation about the upcoming projects. The news that Peter Jackson is working on a new movie has sent waves of anticipation through the fandom, but the prospect of recasting iconic characters like Gandalf leaves me feeling rather uneasy.
The Lord of the Rings franchise is one of the most beloved in pop culture history, thanks to both J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and the beloved movies (which are streaming with a Max subscription). We’re getting new content thanks to the development of The Hunt for Gollum, which has fans wondering about which actors from the Lord of the Rings cast might reprise their roles. Although Sir Ian McKellen name dropped Harry Potter when explaining why Gandalf might be recast for the new film.
The announcement that Peter Jackson was working on a new “Lord of the Rings” film caused quite a stir online, and since then, there have been numerous queries and fan speculations. Although Viggo Mortensen has hinted at a potential comeback, another key figure in doubt is the esteemed Ian McKellen. During his interview on “This Morning,” the 85-year-old actor discussed why his character might be replaced, stating:
Don’t forget there were two Dumbledores.
Points were made. Plenty of franchises have recast major roles before, including the Harry Potter movies. Hogwarts got a new Headmaster after actor Richard Harris died in 2022, making way for late actor Michael Gambon to take over the mantle for the rest of the movies. So there’s precedent if another Gandalf is brought in by Peter Jackson.
During a recent interview, Ian McKellen mentioned his age and the time required to produce films like “The Lord of the Rings” as potential reasons why he might not reprise his role as Gandalf again. However, regarding “The Hunt for Gollum,” he acknowledges that there could be another actor taking over, but he expresses a preference to stay involved if it’s feasible. In his own words:
One thing I really yearn for is a return to New Zealand, my top priority. Moreover, it’s something I can’t abide the thought of anyone else portraying Gandalf.
Is it not reasonable to assume that, given they spent numerous years filming the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy in New Zealand, Sir Ian McKellen and his fellow actors would have deep-rooted emotions towards their work on the franchise? However, considering it’s been close to two decades since “The Return of the King” was released in 2003, coordinating a reunion with the original cast could pose challenges.
Still, it’s hard to imagine anyone but Sir Ian McKellen as the live-action Gandalf. Although with the Rings of Power series (which is streaming with an Amazon Prime subscription) fans are wondering if the mysterious Stranger might actually be Gandalf. Only time will tell, but however possibly plays the beloved Wizard will have some big shoes to fill… especially compared to how small Hobbits are.
In 2026, it’s anticipated that “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” will hit the big screen. To make that happen, progress needs to quicken. Meanwhile, take a look at the upcoming movie releases in 2025.
