Valentine’s Day can sometimes be tough to navigate without dwelling on former partners. For Marvin Gable, a reformed ex-criminal turned realtor, it becomes especially challenging when an old love reappears, threatening to pull him back into his previous life. The movie, titled “Love Takes a Toll“, combines humor, romance, and fast-paced action in an engaging narrative.
This movie boasts an intricate storyline filled with numerous action sequences and characters, making it somewhat challenging to keep up at times. It bears resemblance to productions like “Bullet Train,” helmed by David Leitch, who is also the producer of “Love Hurts.” In addition to “Love Hurts,” Leitch established the production company responsible for films such as “Nobody” and “The Fall Guy” in 2024. The ensemble cast of “Love Hurts” includes two Academy Award winners from this decade, Ke Huy Quan and Ariana Debose. Furthermore, there’s a reunion of two actors from the classic movie “The Goonies,” with Sean Astin, now grown-up, portraying Ke Huy Quan’s superior at work.
Who Stole from Whom? Where ‘Love Hurts’ Gets Messy
As a passionate cinephile, I must confess that the narrative of “Love Hurts” left me somewhat bewildered at times. The intricate web of alliances, enmities, and shifting loyalties within the film made it challenging to keep track of who was working for whom. Additionally, there were several instances where money seemed to change hands mysteriously, adding another layer of complexity to the storyline.
Amidst the fast-paced action sequences that punctuate the movie, it became even more difficult to decipher the plot twists and turns. All in all, while the film was visually engaging, I found myself wishing for a bit more clarity in its storytelling.
The movie centers on a team associated with a criminal enterprise, run by Alvin “Knuckles” Gable (portrayed by Daniel Wu). Knuckles is the central villain of the story, while his real estate brother, Marvin Gable (played by Ke Huy Quan), serves as the hero. Previously working under Knuckles, Marvin was tasked with eliminating Ariana Debose’s character, Rose, who was suspected of stealing money from Knuckles. However, Rose was Knuckles’s right-hand woman, and Marvin had romantic feelings for her. Consequently, he spared her life without informing Knuckles about it.
Rose revisits the urban hub where Knuckles’s criminal syndicate thrives, causing widespread unease. In response, Knuckles dispatches an assassin called Raven to probe Marvin for information, but Raven is unsuccessful in her mission. With Renny Merlow now serving as Knuckles’s second-in-command, he orders two hired guns under his command to pursue Marvin aggressively as well.
In the meantime, it turns out that Rose has discovered a scheme involving theft within the criminal group she’s part of. She’s taken Kippy Betts, Knuckles’s accountant and well-known comedian Rhys Darby’s character, hostage to get him to disclose information about Knuckles’s finances. As it turns out, Kippy confesses that he and Merlot embezzled money from Knuckles, some of which they used to implicate Rose falsely. Furthermore, Kippy spills the beans about how Knuckles has been deceiving his business partners as well.
A Bloody Brawl Leads to a Dead Property Brother
In one of the properties Marvin is trying to sell, Rose unexpectedly admits that she has kidnapped Kippy. She questions Kippy in the laundry room as two of Marvin’s clients arrive without warning, expressing their desire to finalize the purchase of the house. Trying to maintain a semblance of normality, Marvin conceals Kippy and summons his assistant, Ashley, for the necessary paperwork. However, Ashley has developed feelings for a man named Raven, whom she encountered after discovering some of his poetry in Marvin’s office. Upon hearing Marvin’s phone call, Raven decides to go to the house with Ashley to complete the transaction.
The mere sight of Raven unsettles the buyers, while Marvin attempts to keep a calm facade. However, Raven turns aggressive towards Marvin. Amidst the ensuing turmoil, Kippy slips away and contacts Merlow, sharing the whereabouts of Rose and Marvin. Merlow then dispatches King and Otis to the residence, instructing them to retrieve Rose and Marvin, if necessary, by eliminating Raven in the process.
As King and Otis step into the house, they take out their firearms. With firearms at the ready, they pass by Jeff Zaks, a real estate agent who often displays a photo of himself wearing a karate uniform on his listings. Known for renovating homes on TV’s “Property Brothers,” Drew Scott portrays Zaks. In an instant, King and Otis shoot Zaks in the head as he rushes in to assist Marvin.
In this rephrased version, Marvin discovers that Rose had left during their confrontation with King and Otis. Inspired by Ashley’s affection towards Raven, he decides to pursue Rose instead.
The Film Ends with a Brotherly Brawl
In a turn of events, Rose visits Knuckles’ stronghold, only to discover Knuckles in the midst of avenging himself against Merlow for stealing from him. Upon learning that Knuckles had lied about his financial status, Rose confronts him. In response, Knuckles dispatches his minions towards her. Just as it seems all hope is lost, Marvin forcefully enters the scene to shield Rose.
Together, they manage to subdue Knuckles’ thugs in a thrilling, violent skirmish. Knuckles retreats to his office, with Marvin hot on his heels. Inside, Knuckles reveals to Marvin that he was responsible for the death of Marvin’s mentor and close friend – a fellow realtor.
In this rephrased version: Rose arrives at Knuckles’ headquarters to find him attacking Merlow, who had deceived Knuckles financially. She informs Knuckles of her knowledge about his lies. In retaliation, Knuckles orders his men to chase after Rose. However, Marvin intervenes and fights off the henchmen.
The ensuing battle results in a dramatic confrontation between our heroes and Knuckles’ minions. Afterward, Knuckles slips away to his office, with Marvin pursuing him. In the privacy of his office, Knuckles confesses to Marvin that he had murdered Marvin’s beloved mentor, who was also a close friend in Marvin’s real estate career.
In a fierce, individual confrontation, it’s Knuckles against Marvin. Knuckles provokes Marvin, boasting about his superiority, claiming he’s never lost to the crime boss in a brawl. However, the tables turn and Marvin emerges victorious. With Knuckles humbled on the floor, Rose informs him that she exposed his deceit to his Russian associates. The Russians then take Knuckles away, and outside, Marvin expresses his affection for Rose: “I love you.” And so, they all live contentedly ever after.
