Luca Guadagnino to Direct True-Life OpenAI Movie ‘Artificial’ for Amazon MGM

Since he’s no longer working on the DC series “Sgt. Rock“, Luca Guadagnino has moved forward and secured a new film project to direct instead.

Guadagnino is discussing possibilities for directing the film “Artificial“, which depicts the chaotic phase experienced by AI company OpenAI in 2023, during which their CEO, Sam Altman, was both dismissed and reinstated within a few days.

I’m thrilled to be part of the buzz surrounding the swiftly assembled project by Heyday Films, led by David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford, at Amazon MGM Studios. Simon Rich is the mastermind behind the script and will also serve as a producer, with Jennifer Fox joining in on the production discussions too!

At what speed is this progressing? It’s been reported that Amazon might initiate production as early as this summer, aiming to film in both San Francisco and Italy.

As a gamer, I’m excitedly waiting to see who might join the team as new actors for an upcoming project. While nothing is finalized yet and it all depends on Guadagnino’s deal being sealed, some talented individuals like Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro from A Complete Unknown, and Yura Borisov from Anora are reportedly interested.

In the autumn of 2023, Altman, one of OpenAI’s co-founders, was removed as CEO by the company’s board due to escalating worries about AI safety and allegations of misconduct. However, following a series of protests, he was reinstated just five days later. According to reports, if everything proceeds as intended, Garfield might portray Altman, Barbaro could depict Mira Murati in the role of chief technology officer, and Borisov may take on the character of Ilya Sutskever, another co-founder who spearheaded the campaign to dismiss Altman.

Artificial will team up Guadagnino and Amazon MGM for their third project together. Previously, he directed ‘After the Hunt’, a movie featuring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri, set to hit cinemas on October 10th. He also helmed ‘Challengers’ starring Zendaya, which was released in theaters last year by the same studio.
