Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy Sets The Record Straight On Those Retirement Rumors, But I’m More Excited About The Star Wars Movie Updates She Shared

Previously circulated were reports suggesting that Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm’s president, might step down by year-end. However, Kennedy, who took over from George Lucas as company head following Disney’s 2012 acquisition, has officially addressed these retirement speculations. Although it’s good to clear up the confusion, I must admit I’m more thrilled about the latest info she shared regarding some upcoming “Star Wars” films.

Kathleen Kennedy’s Response To The Retirement Rumors

Kennedy made it clear during an interview with Deadline that retirement is not even a distant prospect for her at this point.

To make it clear and straightforward, let me rephrase: The point I’d like to emphasize is that I have no plans for retirement. In fact, my passion for cinema is so strong that I see myself continuing my work in movies until the very end. That’s essential for you to know – I am not retiring from this industry I love so dearly.

Indeed, the confusion seems to have subsided now. It’s Kathleen Kennedy, who made her mark as a film producer on E.T., that I’m referring to, and rest assured, she won’t be departing from the cinematic realm just yet. In fact, she’s had discussions with Disney CEO Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, the co-chair of Disney Entertainment, regarding a potential succession plan for Lucasfilm in the future. As she herself expressed: “We’ve been discussing a succession strategy for Lucasfilm under my leadership at Disney.

Discussions regarding Lucasfilm’s future leadership have been ongoing between myself, Bob and Alan. We boast a fantastic team here, and we plan to make an announcement about this matter in several months or even a year. Our goals are aligned, and the process is moving forward. I will keep updating you as things progress.

It’s logical because at some point, fresh leadership will be needed, and someone else will take over Kennedy’s role. However, for the moment, she is deeply involved in the Star Wars universe, as a note she added.

Currently, I’m working on the film adaptation of The Mandalorian, and following that, I’ll be working on Sean Levy’s project. This means I’ll continue at Lucasfilm for now, carefully considering with Bob and Alan who will take over from me. So everything is in motion, and we’ll make an announcement about it when we deem it appropriate.

More to come…
