Lucy Liu Is Open To Reprising 'Charlies Angels' Role in Possible Sequel

As a long-time fan of the iconic Charlie’s Angels franchise, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia at the prospect of Lucy Liu possibly returning to her role as Alex Munday. The memories of watching those action-packed adventures alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz are still vivid in my mind, and the thought of seeing them together once more brings a smile to my face.

Lucy Liu has expressed interest in reprising her role from Charlie’s Angels. Known for playing Alex Munday in the 2000 film and its sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, Liu told Entertainment Tonight that she wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to revisit her character. However, fans should be cautious about getting too excited as there hasn’t been any official confirmation of another Charlie’s Angels movie yet.

“I usually don’t get informed about things until they’ve already occurred. I won’t refuse such opportunities. However, I’d find it surprising if any changes actually took place. It’s always hard to predict the future until it unfolds.

The movies “Charlie’s Angels” and its follow-up were inspired by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts’ 1976 popular TV series, which centered around three female private investigators working for an enigmatic boss named Charlie. In the original TV show, Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett spearheaded the first season. Upon hitting theaters in 2000, the movie remake became a blockbuster, earning over $260 million, while its 2003 sequel garnered more than $250 million. The films’ appeal stemmed from their nostalgic elements and depiction of three strong, competent, and autonomous women in the action scenes. In an interview with a publication about her experience sharing the screen with Diaz and Barrymore, Liu expressed:

The film featured a trio of powerful women who enjoyed each other’s company and occasionally broke the ice with some light-hearted humor. Essentially, it was a fun, uncomplicated story without any heavy or profound themes.

2019 saw the release of another adaptation of “Charlie’s Angels” in cinemas, featuring an impressive ensemble consisting of Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. However, despite the directorial skills of Elizabeth Banks, this project did not resonate with critics or viewers alike. In contrast, both original “Charlie’s Angels” and “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” were helmed by McG. If a reboot were to happen in the future, there might be another director eager to take on the task – during an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Zoë Kravitz, who gained praise for her directorial debut “Blink Twice,” expressed her interest in directing a potential sequel of “Charlie’s Angels.

As a film enthusiast, let me express my feelings: If there’s ever a remake of “Charlie’s Angels”, it would be my ultimate dream come true to direct it! These films have always been among my favorites. In fact, I’ve actually approached my agent about this opportunity!

Barrymore, known for playing Dylan Sanders in those action movies, disclosed that she’d inquired from her representative if there was a chance for Kravitz to be part of any future projects.

It’s amusing that you mention it, as I recently contacted my agent asking if Zoe might be open to…

Excitingly, it seems like we might be in for another Angels adventure! While nothing is officially confirmed yet, the stars are certainly lining up: Diaz has returned from her acting break, Liu and Barrymore have shown interest, and 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of our first movie. In the meantime, keep an eye out for Liu’s upcoming project, “Red One,” hitting theaters on November 15 this year.
