Lukas Haas Reveals Grueling ‘Revenant’ Shoot Secrets!

This year, Sean Baker might have won Oscars in coveted categories for a filmmaker, but it’s important not to overlook Alejandro G. Iñárritu who won Best Director twice – in 2014 and 2015, for Birdman and The Revenant respectively. It’s amazing to think that The Revenant was released 10 years ago now, a film that finally bagged Leonardo DiCaprio his long-awaited Academy Award for Best Actor. Alongside him in The Revenant was the talented Lukas Haas, whose latest movie, High Rollers, is now available on demand and digital streaming platforms. In an interview with MovieWeb, Haas spoke about his experience working with Iñárritu while promoting High Rollers, sharing insights as Iñárritu’s upcoming film gears up for production.

Haas shared with us that we occasionally keep in touch and that he hasn’t gotten many updates on his latest movie, but it seems promising. However, any information I have is likely nothing new to you. He mentioned that with ‘The Revenant,’ though, let me tell you, the man is incredibly talented. Filming was extremely challenging, as he admitted himself. But that was exactly what he aimed for – a difficult production was his goal. In fact, at our initial meeting with him and all the actors, he made it clear: ‘This is going to be really tough, and that’s the whole idea,’ he said.”

This version aims to maintain the original tone while simplifying some sentences and using more conversational language for a smoother read.

The person is essentially saying, “This film centers around hardship and anguish. Expect to feel discomfort and distress, as well as myself. We will experience this ordeal collectively.

Haas clarified that the experience wasn’t sugar-coated or made to appear more modern than it was. Instead, we wore authentic old clothing like bear skins and such. It was quite an immersive experience, lasting several months in Calgary, which felt very isolated. He also mentioned that after a while, the isolation could lead to feelings of despondency due to being so cut off from the world.

It was absolutely worth the wait… You’re essentially privileged to observe these extraordinary filmmakers in action, including Emmanuel Lubezki, popularly known as Chivo, and his breathtaking cinematography… Not to mention all those talented individuals, like Leo and the entire team. It was a truly delightful experience.

Lukas Haas on Shooting in the “Vegas of the South”

About ten years after, Haas finds himself in sleeker projects, such as a couple of caper movies with John Travolta. The list started with “Cash Out” that hit the screens last year, focusing on a contemporary bank heist that goes awry. Following closely was this year’s “High Rollers”, an upscale sequel where Haas and Travolta attempt to rob a glamorous casino. The initial production occurred in Georgia, while the sequel was filmed in Mississippi. Haas shared his thoughts on which experience was more fulfilling:

We found ourselves in a rather uninviting bank without windows, situated in an area that wasn’t particularly lively. On the contrary, Biloxi turned out to be a vibrant and entertaining destination. I had no idea it existed, but it was like a Southern version of Las Vegas. There are numerous casinos there, and it’s also located in a picturesque part of the South. I ventured on road trips around the region, visiting Florida among other places. So, “High Rollers” was a much more enjoyable experience for me.
