He uses dark side powers sparingly during this time for added force, particularly towards the end. Moreover, he hasn’t suffered severe injuries or undergone significant setbacks, unlike being left powerless and burnt like a Crème brûlée dessert.
1. Determining the pinnacle of Luke Skywalker’s abilities can be a challenge since it largely occurs beyond the films and series we’ve watched up to now. The most we’ve seen so far might be his appearance at the end of “The Mandalorian” Season 2, displaying his saber mastery and Force prowess as he effortlessly dispatches a group of dark trooper droids. In terms of age and training, this Luke is roughly equal to peak Anakin, but it’s likely that his true zenith occurred some time later on.
As a devoted Star Wars gamer, I can’t help but be captivated by Luke Skywalker’s past exploits, especially those depicted in the novels and comics. In these stories, I’ve witnessed Luke bravely facing off against formidable adversaries, such as the relentless Knights of Ren and the menacing possessed warrior Kiza. Although we’re focusing on the present Star Wars canon for this discussion, it’s challenging to overlook Luke’s impressive list of heroic accomplishments from the Expanded Universe.
Fight!
To ensure a fair fight for this experiment, let’s select a familiar location for Luke and Anakin’s confrontation – a place they both have strong connections to. Since they spent their childhood on Tatooine, it’s a logical choice. However, since Anakin dislikes sand intensely, we will shift the battle from the Jundland Wastes to the bustling streets of Mos Eisley. This decision offers our combatants additional resources and the strategic advantage of rooftops – an essential element in any lightsaber duel.
In simpler terms, the current storyline doesn’t provide much information on lightsaber forms beyond what’s shown in the EU (Expanded Universe), but based on the EU’s timeline, both Luke and Anakin practiced Form V, which is characterized by counterattacks and overhead strikes. This aggressive style, called Djem So, is noticeable in the movies. So we will incorporate it into our study, despite some uncertainty regarding the specifics of certain lightsaber forms.
Despite sharing similar combat techniques, Anakin Skywalker is generally more aggressive in his fighting style compared to Luke Skywalker. In a fight, Anakin’s lightsaber attacks would create a chaotic whirlwind, forcing Luke into a defensive position. However, it’s important to note that Luke has demonstrated remarkable patience in the face of adversity, which ultimately led to Anakin’s downfall during his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar.
Luke just barely gets the edge over Anakin
Initially, I was convinced Anakin would emerge victorious in our hypothetical duel. His mastery over the lightsaber surpasses Luke’s, primarily because Luke’s greatest asset is his connection to the Force. Moreover, while Luke gains valuable insights from Yoda, Obi-Wan, and old Jedi texts, these resources can’t match the battlefield experience and intensive sparring that Anakin has undergone.
Despite my initial thoughts, I’ve grown more convinced that Luke would emerge as the winner between the two. Anakin may be the more aggressive fighter, true, but this very trait is also his downfall. He succumbed to Dooku in “Attack of the Clones” and Obi-Wan in “Revenge of the Sith,” both times due to a lack of self-control. At his strongest, Luke excels in patience and can keep up with Anakin’s most intense assaults through his mastery of Form V. Eventually, Anakin will falter – as he has a habit of doing – and a peak Luke would be more than capable of exploiting this mistake.
The point about Anakin’s dueling experience remains valid, as acknowledged by “The Mandalorian” showrunner Jon Favreau. Anakin may have an edge over Luke in a fight due to his extensive combat background. In hypothetical encounters, Anakin might win around three or four bouts just based on raw aggression and technique. However, a key lesson from “Star Wars” is that achieving balance is crucial for success in a lightsaber duel.
