As a lifelong art enthusiast who has been following André Heller’s dream since its inception, I cannot contain my excitement for Luna Luna’s multi-city tour! It’s like a time machine transporting us back to 1987 when these artistic titans graced the first and only Luna Luna art carnival.
After a long-held dream spanning 36 years, André Heller’s project Luna Luna is embarking on a tour across multiple cities. This November, residents of New York will have the opportunity to experience a ferris wheel crafted by Jean-Michel Basquiat, a carousel designed by Keith Haring, and more extraordinary attractions.
Heller, an artist, dreamt up an idea that could have made a great Netflix documentary – the first and only Luna Luna art carnival in Hamburg during summer 1987. However, due to legal and financial issues, the project collapsed. The artwork created was stored away for years until Drake unexpectedly stepped in to revive the carnival for a new audience.
Located at The Shed in Manhattan and set to open on November 20, the exhibition titled “Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy” will showcase unique pieces created decades ago by renowned artists such as David Hockney, Salvador Dalí, Sonia Delaunay, Monika Gil’sing, Kenny Scharf and Roy Lichtenstein. The museum’s CEO, Max Hodges, commented in an interview with The New York Times that “the spirit of this exhibition aligns exceptionally well with the ethos of The Shed, as it presents the work of leading artists in a captivating and accessible manner”.
Enthusiasts wanting a piece of the event in their own space can look forward to purchasing items like prints, home decor, and apparel designed exclusively for this occasion. Explore the complete lineup, along with details about the New York edition, by shopping online.
