Lupita Nyongo Honors Black Panther Co-Star Chadwick Boseman

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours in the dark, mesmerized by the magic of celluloid, I find myself deeply moved by Lupita Nyong’o’s heartfelt tribute to her late co-star Chadwick Boseman. Her emotional admission that she hasn’t watched Black Panther since his passing underscores the profound impact he had on not just the film industry but also on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Lupita Nyong’o shares that she hasn’t re-watched Black Panther since Chadwick Boseman passed away from cancer in 2020, at the age of 43. During a discussion at the BFI London Film Festival about her career and upbringing in Kenya, the actress spoke candidly about her feelings of loss and paid an emotional homage to the late actor.

As a film enthusiast who’s had the privilege of working with some incredible directors, I shared some memorable moments from my career during that conversation. One such moment was from Ryan Coogler’s Marvel blockbuster where I played Nakia alongside Chadwick as Black Panther. Admittedly, it’s been a while since I last watched it since his passing, and I found myself momentarily overwhelmed. The Oscar-winning actress, Grace Barber-Plentie, was moderating the discussion, and I confessed, “I haven’t seen the film since he died, so I’m having a moment.” After getting emotional, I gathered my thoughts and spoke candidly about my feelings. “The grief,” I said through tears, “is just the love with no place to put it.

Barber-Plentie proposed changing topics, but Nyong’o preferred to keep discussing the subject. In her words, as reported in a video by The Hollywood Reporter on date X, she said, “I don’t shy away from the tears or the sorrow. You simply learn to live with it.” She added, “The experience will always be intertwined with the love that was cultivated.

Four years back, I lost a beloved screen icon when Chadwick Boseman succumbed to a four-year long secret fight against colon cancer. His swan song was the riveting Netflix production, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2020), where he shared the screen with the equally captivating Viola Davis.

Prior to his role as Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman gained prominence through his performances as Jackie Robinson in the 2013 film “42” and James Brown in the 2014 biopic “Get on Up.” The South Carolinian debuted as Black Panther in “Captain America: Civil War,” released in 2016. Marvel’s “Black Panther” marked a historic milestone for the studio, being the first film to feature a Black lead actor. This superhero movie shattered box office records upon its premiere, earning over $1 billion at the global box office and becoming the highest-grossing film with a primarily African American cast.

During BFI, Nyong’o discussed the initial doubts of Marvel executives about the acceptance of a comic book film featuring Black actors. She pointed out that the success of “Black Panther” proved wrong the notion that movies with Black leads aren’t financially successful, expressing it as: “The triumph of Black Panther challenged and shattered the belief that such projects wouldn’t thrive in the marketplace.

From the start, I sensed that what we were working on was truly extraordinary. If we’re allowed to proceed and manage to pull it off, the outcome will undeniably be astounding.

In 2022, Lupita Nyong’o once again took on her character in the sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This film garnered a staggering $859 million globally, as reported by Box Office Mojo. The movie poignantly bids adieu to Boseman with an emotional goodbye. Previously, Coogler expressed that it was comforting to be honoring someone they had come to know through their work.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as the Marvel Cinematic Universe carries forward the legacy of my late friend Chadwick Boseman through an animated spin-off series titled “Eyes of Wakanda.” This upcoming Disney+ production offers us a rare chance to witness him in action once more. Reflecting on Boseman at BFI, Lupita Nyong’o expressed her feelings beautifully: “I’m still processing my grief, but I’m also amazed that we get to see him alive on screen again. That’s just fantastic.

Currently, you can stream both “Black Panther” and its sequel titled “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” on Disney+. As of now, there’s no official announcement regarding the release date, storyline, or cast for the upcoming Black Panther animated TV series.
