M. Night Shyamalan Reveals the Post-Credit Scene Wasn't Scripted

As a seasoned moviegoer with over three decades of experiencing the silver screen’s twists and turns, I must say that M. Night Shyamalan‘s latest offering, Trap, has left me both intrigued and somewhat underwhelmed. While Josh Hartnett delivers a commanding performance throughout the film, the mid-credit sequence was an unexpected delight – even though it wasn’t part of the original script.

Warning: The Following Contains Major Spoilers for Trap

M. Night Shyamalan is once again drawing attention with his new film titled Trap, and John Hartnett delivers a strong performance throughout most of the movie. However, there’s a noteworthy deviation from the original script: an additional scene during the mid-credits that includes Jonathan Langdon’s character, Jamie, the concert worker with whom Hartnett’s character had interactions earlier in the film.

According to Gizmodo, Shyamalan casually mentioned that the mid-credit scene was added as a spontaneous idea to provide viewers with a chuckle upon leaving the theater. In this brief extra scene, we find Jamie watching the news and recognizing the man he conversed with at the concert as none other than The Butcher – the very criminal the police were pursuing. This scene cleverly resolved a minor plot hole in the movie by making it clear what thoughts might have been going through Jamie’s mind after realizing his narrow escape from becoming another victim.

In the original plan, that wasn’t included. But when I saw the opportunity, I exclaimed something like, “This is great! I’m going to film it right now.” And so, I started preparing for it on the spot, saying, “Let’s get this ready. Whenever I find an hour or two, I’ll start shooting it. Let’s go ahead and do it.”

Trap Failed to Deliver on Expectations

During the intermission scene in “Trap”, there was a pleasant surprise, but unfortunately, the movie as a whole didn’t meet its potential. However, it’s not entirely M. Night Shyamalan’s fault. Given his reputation for including a thrilling twist reminiscent of Hitchcock in all his films, viewers may have had unrealistic expectations. Consequently, many were disappointed by the conclusion. Instead of creating a “oh no!” moment, the story seemed to lose momentum, and the major twist was that Alison Pill’s character, Hartnett’s wife, was the one who informed the police about her husband being The Butcher.

Prior to the release of “Trap,” Shyamalan mentioned that contrary to popular belief, the trailer did not reveal the twist as many assumed. However, if you delve deeper into his words, it seems that Shyamalan may have unintentionally given a hint about the twist when he spoke to Empire Magazine beforehand.

“From the onset of filming, it was my intention to establish the narrative months prior to your cinema experience. Being a movie critic and storyteller at heart, I felt it necessary to immerse myself in this timeline, taking great care to ensure a seamless unfolding of events.”

In the movie “Trap”, it’s the particular line that reveals the plot twist. This is because Rachel, portrayed by Pill’s character, had been communicating with the police months before the film starts, expressing her doubts about her husband being a serial killer. She orchestrated the Lady Raven concert as a means to capture him, which sets up the main storyline.

Was Shyamalan’s twist in this film not one of his best? That’s understandable given the high expectations audiences have for him. However, “Trap” remains an enjoyable ride, largely thanks to Hartnett’s captivating performance as Cooper Adams, a role that is likely to be fondly remembered by fans for a long time.
