M3GAN 2.0 Producer James Wan Explains How M3GAN Differs from Other Evil Dolls (WATCH)

Over time, pop culture has introduced many malevolent dolls like Chucky, Annabelle, and Slappy, causing mayhem and destruction. However, unlike these dolls that gain life from supernatural sources, the unique entity in the genre, M3GAN, stands out as something entirely different.

In a recently released featurette, horror mastermind James Wan clarifies that M3GAN is an extraordinary, non-malevolent creation unlike any other murderous dolls. He explains that she’s not supernatural but rather technology brought to life. Wan returns as a producer for the sequel, M3GAN 2.0, which is set to hit theaters on June 27 (get your tickets here). Alongside him, Jason Blum continues his role in producing the follow-up, following the merger of their production companies: Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. Mr. Blum characterizes the second installment as “more immense, more menacing, and more violent” compared to the original.

Gerard Johnstone, the returning director who wrote the screenplay this time, playfully hints, “There are some exciting, spooky elements to look forward to.” Blumhouse and Atomic Monster were fully on board with these ideas, he teases. Besides Johnstone, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Mark D. Katchur are also executive producers of this project.

Since then, Gemma (Allison Williams) and Cady (Violet McGraw) have kept her confined within a home assistant device. However, you can’t keep a genie in a bottle forever. When a new danger arises, introducing a fresh killing machine modeled after M3GAN’s underlying technology, named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno, enters the scene, it falls upon M3GAN to step up once more, this time armed with some cool enhancements, to protect everyone.

In a new development, Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps reprise their roles as Gemma’s trusted associates, Cole and Tess. Additionally, Aristotle Athari from Saturday Night Live, Timm Sharp known for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and Emmy-nominated Jemaine Clement of What We Do in the Shadows take on fresh characters in the series.
