As a devoted fan of horror and suspense narratives, I am absolutely thrilled to hear about Akela Cooper‘s latest venture into the realm of the macabre. Her collaboration with James Wan has been nothing short of captivating, and her work on films like M3GAN, The Nun II, and Malignant have solidified her as a powerhouse in the genre.
Akela Cooper, who’s worked with James Wan on films like “M3GAN” and “The Nun II”, is now slated to reimagine the chilling comic book story “The Lot” for the newcomer comic company, Bad Idea.
Cooper, together with Dinesh Shamdasani, the founder and CEO of Bad Idea, and Benjamin Simpson, who leads their film and TV division (previously responsible for “Thelma”), will also contribute to the production.
The narrative revolves around Aviva Copeland, a Black woman who’s just secured a groundbreaking role as a studio head in Hollywood. Her mission to breathe new life into an old studio leads her to renovate a closed soundstage, unearthing a chilling secret: a renowned director enlisted genuine cult members for a genuine occult ritual during the filming of his horror masterpiece. Confronted with the resurfacing of ancient evil in the most treacherous environment – a bustling Hollywood studio lot – Aviva must navigate the challenges that lie ahead.
The comic book featuring four issues was penned by Marguerite Bennett, known for her work on Batwoman, and illustrated by Renato Guedes, who has a background in titles like Wolverine and Superman. This publication hit the stands in 2021, making its debut as part of Bad Idea’s initial series.
During the New York Comic Con that began today at the Javits Convention Center, the title “The Lot” number 1 is being spotlighted. On Saturday, October 19th at 3:00 PM in room 408, Bad Idea will distribute a special New York Comic Con edition of “The Lot” no. 1, which has a fresh cover designed by EM Carroll (known for “Through the Woods”). As a dedicated admirer, I’m excited to share that the intriguing project, “Bad Idea,” is being financed by the brilliant minds at Smartest Termite, spearheaded by producers Andrew Gallina and Shahin Chandrasoma. They are currently engrossed in bringing adaptations of various titles to life, including the gripping action thriller, “Ordained.” Notably, the script for this enthralling tale is being penned by Derek Kolstad, known for his exceptional work on “John Wick.
Through her collaborations with Wan, Cooper has made a significant mark in the horror genre. Together they penned “Malignant”, with Wan serving as director, and she is also responsible for writing the 2022 blockbuster “M3GAN” and its sequel, “M3GAN 2.0”, set to premiere on June 27, 2025. Additionally, Cooper has contributed to Wan’s “Conjuring Universe”, specifically the film “The Nun II”.
