In the first half of season 1 on MobLand, Helen Mirren’s character Maeve Harrigan orchestrated events subtly like a hidden puppet master. However, her long-term objectives may now be becoming clearer. After the demise of Vron Stevenson in episode 5, the conflict between the Harrigans and the Stevensons has intensified significantly, foreshadowing a series of violent reprisals for the Harrigan clan. Although one might assume that controlling London’s fentanyl trade is sufficient motivation, it seems that the Harrigans have little to gain beyond this prolonged war with Richie Stevenson.
Since the initial shooting of Archie Hammond in the first episode of MobLand, Maeve has consistently guided Conrad towards conflict. She’s been skillful at influencing those around her, pushing them towards war, despite Harry and Kevin’s efforts to maintain peace between the families. Even though it appears that Conrad claimed responsibility for killing Vron Stevenson, it seems highly likely that it was Maeve who ultimately made the decision that escalated the tension beyond repair. This suggests a clear endgame for Maeve, which could be disastrous for Conrad and the Harrigans.
Why Maeve Tells Richie Where To Find Brendan & Seraphina
She Points The Harrigans’ Nemesis To Their Hotel
During episode 6 of “MobLand”, Maeve made an unexpected move by dialing Richie Stevenson’s private number. With Brendan and Seraphina in Antwerp, Belgium, away from the protective surroundings of the Cotswolds, they were already in potential danger from Richie Stevenson. However, this danger became reality when Maeve not only revealed their whereabouts but also disclosed the hotel where they were staying. This single phone call was all it took to set events in motion that put Brendan and Seraphina under Richie’s control, as he merely needed to contact the cartel for this purpose.
As a movie enthusiast, I blundered when I told Richie he could do whatever he wished with Seraphina, on the condition that he spared her eldest son Brendan. My intention was crystal clear: Killing Conrad’s cherished daughter Seraphina would drive the Harrigan patriarch to the brink, adding more chaos to his already unstable state. However, I made this demand to Richie shortly after mocking the death of his wife in a gruesome manner, so Brendan isn’t in a better position than Seraphina. If either is killed, it’s unlikely they’ll meet their end off-screen, but at the very least, they’re both firmly under Richie’s control now.
Does Maeve Want To Take Over The Empire From Conrad?
Every Move She Makes Undermines Him
Maeve directing Richie towards Seraphina is part of a series of actions that seem intended to weaken Conrad’s control over his empire, family, and personal life. It was Maeve who instigated Conrad’s murder of Archie Hammond, an old friend, and encouraged him to pursue a share in the fentanyl trade with Richie. On multiple instances, she has taunted or essentially labeled him as a coward for not maintaining his reputation as “Conrad the Dread”, the feared gangster he used to be.
It appears that Maeve’s actions are strategically planned with the intent of excluding Conrad from the situation, possibly as retaliation for his repeated infidelities. This could explain why she gave away their daughter, Seraphina, who is a result of one of these indiscretions. This might suggest a deeper motivation behind Maeve’s actions, potentially leading to a family conflict with the Harrigans, where Conrad would be under the greatest threat. While Harry possesses the means and aptitude to aid the Harrigans, he doesn’t necessarily need Conrad in charge.
Maeve’s Plans May Be Succeeding In MobLand
Conrad Seems To Be Growing More Volatile By The Day
At some point, Conrad was a formidable and shrewd gangster, having expanded the Harrigan crime empire into its present state. However, now it appears he’s just a volatile old man, suggesting that Maeve’s schemes are taking effect. The act of eliminating Archie, a key player in the business aspect of the criminal operation, was a questionable move with scant evidence that he was a snitch. His actions have grown increasingly erratic as well.
In successive instances, he’s been harassing and threatening Jan Da Souza without any substantial evidence of misconduct other than what Maeve claims. He’s also made inappropriate suggestions towards Gina Da Souza, who is merely 15 years old. These actions suggest a man on the verge of losing control. The wild phone call to Richie Stevenson served as conclusive evidence; it was the act of an unbalanced lunatic rather than a clever crime boss. Maeve appears to be carving out a route for herself to overthrow Conrad as the head of the Harrigan clan in the criminal underworld, or what we call ‘MobLand’.
