Maggie Gyllenhaal Unveils “Radical,” “Punk” ‘The Bride’ at CinemaCon

Maggie Gyllenhaal took the veil off The Bride in Las Vegas.

On Tuesday afternoon, the filmmaker along with lead actress Jessie Buckley appeared on stage at Caesar’s Palace’s Colosseum during Warner Bros.’ studio presentation to unveil a glimpse of their upcoming second film. The executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy from WB were also present for this exciting event.

In this adaptation by Gyllenhaal, Mary Shelley’s tale is reimagined, shifting the setting to 1930s Chicago. The story revolves around a solitary Frankenstein’s monster who seeks aid from Dr. Euphronios to construct a partner for himself. Together, they resuscitate a deceased woman, giving birth to the central character, the Bride. Buckley plays opposite Christian Bale, Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, John Magaro, and Julianne Hough. Interestingly, Gyllenhaal also enlists her family members in this project, with her brother Jake Gyllenhaal and husband Peter Sarsgaard making appearances as well.

After her directorial debut with “The Lost Daughter”, Maggie Gyllenhaal was seeking a next project that was both captivatingly popular and daringly innovative. At a social gathering, she came across a man adorned with a tattoo of the Bride of Frankenstein, which immediately piqued her interest. “This intrigued me, so I returned home and watched the film,” she explained further. “The bride only appears for a brief moment in the movie and doesn’t utter a single word, which is quite distinct from our portrayal.

Gyllenhaal envisioned a bride who outshines Frankenstein’s wildest dreams, a partner who doesn’t quite fit conventional norms. He further mentioned his fascination with monstrous creatures. “We all have a touch of the monstrous within us,” the filmmaker expressed, “which is why we’re drawn to monster movies. It could be that we either run from it our entire lives or embrace it.

Reading Gyllenhaal’s script felt like getting jolted by an electric current for me – it was that exhilarating and unlike anything I had ever encountered before. She’s a phenomenal woman, truly extraordinary. If she had asked me to play a sheep in her movie, I would have gladly done so without a second thought.

As a passionate admirer, I’d say The Bride’s bond with Frankenstein is like no other love story – it’s got the raw, rebellious spirit of legends such as Bonnie and Clyde and Wild at Heart. It’s a connection that’s fueled by passion, much like gasoline, and I can’t help but feel we’re both holding a match to ignite it further.

Gyllenhaal stated that viewers who have watched the film often express that it’s unlike anything they’ve seen before. During his discussion about filming for IMAX, he was excited when speaking to theater owners. He described the movie as a cinematic experience, explaining that Frankenstein is a cinema enthusiast within the film, with his closest bond prior to The Bride being with a movie star. His intention was to create this raw and monstrous love story between punk characters in a classic cinematic manner that paid homage to these unique characters.

Subsequently, she presented clips depicting sequences of a burial and the resurrection of Buckley’s character by the monster, who comments in a voiceover, “All that remains now is to live.” The ensuing scenes portray the duo traversing multiple locations and interacting with an array of characters, offering a captivating odyssey through stunning landscapes. In a scene evoking Joker and Harley Quinn, Frankenstein brutally slaughters an individual in broad daylight on the street. A tagline appeared, “Here Comes the Mother Fking Bride.” To conclude, Buckley’s bride queries, “What’s my name? I can’t recall it.
