As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that Hasbro is breathing life into a cinematic universe inspired by their iconic “Magic: The Gathering” game! They’re partnering with Legendary Entertainment to create a shared Magic: The Gathering universe, promising an exciting blend of film and television content. First off the bat is the transformation of the game into a movie.
Magic: The Gathering, created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, marked the debut of the world’s initial trading card game. It quickly gained global popularity, becoming a common feature in schoolyards during the 90s and sparking numerous conventions. Hasbro took over Wizards of the Coast in 1999, attributing the game’s success to its captivating characters, imaginative settings, and the strategic depth it demands for play. The game is now estimated to have reached approximately 50 million players worldwide.
Legendary’s global production chairman expressed that they are proud caretakers of unique, cherished intellectual properties, and none exemplify this more than ‘Magic: The Gathering’. Together with Hasbro, we eagerly anticipate developing a multimedia realm that delights existing fans and attracts a vast number of new ones,” said Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production.
Legendary Entertainment has transformed familiar names into franchise expansions, such as the Godzilla vs Kong series and Dune, which cover both film and television. Additionally, they are responsible for Netflix’s Enola Holmes films and will soon present the Minecraft movie featuring Jason Momoa under Warner Bros.’ banner.
Currently, Hasbro has a “Magic: The Gathering” TV series in production at Netflix, helmed by Terry Matalas, who is also known for his work on “Star Trek: Picard”. Contrastingly, about a decade ago, 20th Century Fox was working on a cinematic universe based on the same property, but this never took flight under producer Simon Kinberg.
Zev Foreman, head of Hasbro Films, expressed enthusiasm about this unique and fitting collaboration between one of the world’s most renowned brands and a highly capable caretaker. ‘Magic: The Gathering’, with its long history of crafting imaginative worlds and compelling narratives, aligns seamlessly with Legendary’s versatile strategy for top-tier intellectual properties. We are thrilled about the opportunity to join forces and develop a fresh ‘Magic: The Gathering’ universe together.
