As an ardent fan of the timeless romance that is Maine Pyar Kiya, I find myself deeply moved by the untold story behind Bhagyashree’s performance. It was not just the enchanting chemistry with Salman Khan on screen that made this film a classic; it was her resilience and emotional strength off-screen that truly brought Suman and Maya to life.
1989’s movie “Maine Pyar Kiya,” directed by Sooraj Barjatya, significantly propelled the careers of newcomers Bhagyashree and Salman Khan who had only one credit each at that time. This heartwarming tale is being replayed in cinemas around you now. However, what appeared as a beautiful and dreamy love story to viewers was actually a challenging period for Bhagyashree off-screen as she faced significant personal struggles during the film’s production.
Speaking with HT City, the 55-year-old actress disclosed an emotional moment during the filming of Mere Rang Mein Rangne Wali’s famous scene. She confessed that she often felt overwhelmed and close to tears because at that time, her parents were against her marriage. Between takes, she would break down in tears, and Salman Khan and director Sooraj Barjatya tried to comfort her.
In a charming turn of events, the dynamic between Bhagyashree and Salman Khan on set was adored by many, and fortunately, their connection extended beyond the camera as well. As Bhagyashree reminisced, “Salman was always a mischievous boy, always playing pranks.” One particular memory she can’t forget is how he would tease her playfully. However, their friendship was not just innocent fun – Khan showed great concern for her welfare, ensuring her safety and well-being whenever they were in public together.
35 years ago, Maine Pyar Kiya was released, and Bhagyashree, who played Paayal in the movie, recently wrote a heartfelt message about its anniversary. On her Instagram, she expressed that despite the passage of time, the love for this film seems to only grow stronger. She also mentioned feeling grateful to have been involved with a movie that holds such significance in our cinema’s history.
The actress, Janani, expressed her belief that the movie was an authentic portrayal of love that resonated with viewers, who cherished those moments and made them a part of their own romantic experiences – be it first dates or anniversaries. She added, “It was a film that brought families closer together, and indeed reopened our cinemas.” She graciously thanked Salman, Sooraj, and the Rajshri team for their contributions to this special project.
Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya still remains the highest-grossing Indian film of the 1980s.
