Major James Turrell Exhibition to Open in France Next Month

As a lifelong art enthusiast who has had the pleasure of witnessing some truly remarkable exhibitions, I must say that the upcoming James Turrell show at Gagosian Le Bourget is one I am particularly eager to attend. With over two decades of groundbreaking work on display, this exhibition promises to be an unparalleled exploration of light and space – themes that have captivated me since my early days as a student studying the works of Dan Flavin and Robert Irwin.

Gagosian Gallery is preparing to reveal a new solo exhibition titled “At One” by renowned Light and Space artist James Turrell, at its Le Bourget venue in France. This exhibition is being touted as the most comprehensive European survey of Turrell’s work over the last 25 years, and will feature an assortment of his early projection pieces, woodblock etchings, as well as several new installations, including “Ganzfeld“, “All Clear” (2024), and “Either Or” (2024), the latter being part of his “Wedgework” series.

Starting from the 1960s, artists like Turrell, Dan Flavin, and Robert Irwin revolutionized the art world by moving away from conventional painting techniques and instead focusing on light as both a theoretical and physical medium to investigate the concept of space. Turrell drew inspiration from the Ganzfeld effect, a phenomenon that arises when the brain lacks visual stimuli, leading to an increase in neural noise to fill in missing sensory data. The gallery’s ground-floor installation, “Ganzfeld, All Clear” (2024), immerses viewers in vibrant colors, creating an environment that is simultaneously disorienting and calming, much like navigating through a whiteout during skiing or exploring the vastness of the ocean while diving.

“We usually use light to illuminate things,” Turrell once mused. “I am interested in the ‘thingness’ of light itself. Light does not so much reveal, as it is the revelation itself.”

Accompanying Roden’s light-focused investigations are archival prints, holograms, models, photographs, and two desks that the artist utilized during the 1980s. The exhibition At One will be displayed at Gagosian Le Bourget from October 14, 2021 to June 2025.
