Manisha Koirala recalls shooting Tu Hi Re song from Bombay surrounded by leeches; 'I had to run through the jungle'

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for resilience, I find Manisha Koirala to be nothing short of extraordinary. Her life experiences, particularly her journey in the film industry, are a testament to her unwavering dedication and fortitude.

Manisha Koirala’s success extended beyond the boundaries of any single entertainment industry. Her fans were so captivated by her talent that they wouldn’t miss any movie she starred in, regardless of whether it was originally released in Hindi or not. One example of this is Mani Ratnam’s 1995 romantic drama, Bombay. This film became an eternal classic, and its soundtrack continues to provide comfort to those with heartbreak. However, during a recent interview, the veteran actress revealed that she shot some scenes for the movie in a forest infested with leeches, and she also had a stye on her eye at the time.

When conversing with O2 India, Manisha Koirala reminisced about the challenging song “Tu Hi Re” from the movie Bombay. She journeyed back in memory and explained that during the filming of one part of the song, she was required to stand on rocks with the waves crashing against them, causing large splashes. “That was quite risky,” she emphasized, also mentioning that fortunately, everything went according to plan, and no mishaps occurred. In another situation, while filming the same track, she had to be in a dense jungle teeming with leeches.

In the jungle, leeches were abundant and posed a significant challenge for the actress from Heeramandi, who had to traverse it wearing a blue skirt for the song. She described it as a difficult ordeal. However, they found a solution to cope with this tough circumstance. They were advised to use salt and some individuals opted to wear boots as well.

During the same interview, the actress mentioned that while filming the well-known song “Kehna Hi Kya,” she had an uncomfortable stye on her eye. Believing this might halt production, she informed Rajiv Menon, the director of photography, about it. However, he reassured her and advised Koirala to apply some makeup and continue shooting while he handled the situation discreetly. Ultimately, no one noticed the issue.

Having spent years honing my craft as an actress, I was thrilled to take on the role of Mallikajaan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar earlier this year. This was a departure from any character I had played before, and it challenged me to delve deeper into my acting abilities. To be honest, the experience exceeded all my expectations, as the role demanded an emotional intensity that left me both exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. The reaction of the audience has been overwhelming, and it’s a testament to the power of cinema to transport us to another world. I feel truly grateful for this opportunity, which has enriched my life as an artist.
