Legendary actor Manoj Kumar passed away today, April 4, at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, at the age of 87. His demise has sparked an outpouring of condolences from across India. Beyond his iconic status as an actor, he was also one of the most compassionate stars our country had. He extended a helping hand to Dharmendra during difficult times, even taking on additional work as a ghostwriter to support them financially.
According to a report in News18, when Dharmendra couldn’t establish himself in Mumbai following the failure of his first movie deal, he encountered an up-and-coming actor named Manoj Kumar. Facing similar obstacles, they formed a close bond due to their shared experiences.
In the early days of their time in Mumbai, they decided to share living quarters as roommates. To keep afloat financially, Manoj Kumar accepted freelance writing assignments for ghostwriting projects.
At some point, Dharmendra thought about abandoning his aspirations and returning to Punjab. But Manoj Kumar intervened, urging him not to give up. In the year 1960, Manoj Kumar secured a role in Kaanch Ki Gudia. Recognizing that financial security was imminent, he persuaded Dharmendra to hang on in Mumbai for another month.
That single choice set off a chain reaction, and within a week, Dharmendra landed his major debut with “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere,” kick-starting his career in Bollywood.
On April 4, at the age of 87, Manoj Kumar breathed his last at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. As reported by ANI, his funeral ceremony is scheduled for April 5, 2025.
Besides numerous Bollywood stars expressing their grief, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too expressed his condolences with a touching message and posted old photos in honor of the esteemed actor who has passed away.
