The upcoming game from Bungie, known as Marathon, was initially considered a significant risk, but recent events hint that it may not even be released this year. Originally slated for a September debut, some recent occurrences cast doubt on whether the game will see the light of day in 2021.
As an avid gamer myself, I’m sharing some intriguing news that’s been making waves in the gaming community. Colin Moriarty, an industry insider over at TheGamePost, has dropped a bombshell: Sony seems to have halted all paid marketing for our highly anticipated game. This is quite unusual given its grand scale, which has left many of us questioning whether the current release date might be in jeopardy.
“I was told by someone familiar with marketing plans in a key overseas market that there are now no plans to do paid marketing for Marathon at all,” Moriarty said on his podcast.
“I don’t know if those plans were affected by what has recently happened or if that was always the plan or whatever. But it is considered a fairly unusual move for a game of this high profile.”
Things at Bungie haven’t exactly been running smoothly. According to trusted insiders, the company is grappling with internal challenges. There have been reports of low team spirit, unheeded ideas, and creative disagreements that have persisted for quite some time. The developers claim that top management has been pushing aggressively for a PvP-only format despite early indications that it might deter players.
1) During closed alpha testing, players expressed their concerns as they found the gameplay loop incomplete and lacking guidance. Some felt they were playing an early draft instead of a near-completed game. This was followed by criticism after independent artist ANTIREAL claimed that her artwork had been used without permission, which Bungie later acknowledged.

In the past, Bungie has faced allegations of plagiarism, and the recent situation has only fueled public skepticism. However, it seems that there might be more to the story than meets the eye. According to rumors, the company’s deadline in September isn’t solely about the completion of the game, but rather a cash flow issue related to Sony’s acquisition. It’s been suggested that certain bonuses or milestones are contingent upon meeting this deadline.
If it’s indeed the case that Bungie is rushing Marathon’s release despite apparent problems, this could be because they are doing so. However, Sony seems to be distancing itself from the project. With recent flops of live-service titles like Fairgame$ and Concord under its belt, the company appears cautious about investing in another potentially unsteady venture.
Instead of just being an issue with Marathon, it seems to be part of a larger trend. Games such as Helldivers 2 that have been successful aren’t typically seen as the norm, but rather as exceptions to the rule. At this time, neither Bungie nor Sony has acknowledged any delays in their projects.
However, if marketing plans are abandoned, fan enthusiasm plummets, and the team finds themselves in a state of emergency trying to resolve fundamental issues; it’s challenging to envision Marathon being released on schedule, let alone successfully.
It seems the delay is imminent, but whether it provides Bungie more time to rectify the game or merely extends the unavoidable, remains uncertain.
