Margaret Qualley Follows up The Substance with Gothic Horror Victorian Psycho

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for the macabre and the unconventional, I find myself thoroughly intrigued by the impending collaboration between Margaret Qualley and Dan Kagan on their upcoming Gothic horror film, “Victorian Psycho.

In a fascinating collaboration, some notable figures from this year’s standout films are uniting for their next venture. Actress Margaret Qualley, who shone in the critically acclaimed movie “The Substance,” and Dan Kagan, the producer behind the successful horror film “Longlegs,” are coming together to create a Gothic horror masterpiece titled “Victorian Psycho.” Fresh from the triumph of Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror sensation – now Mubi’s most successful theatrical release ever – Qualley is eager to dive into this new project, while Kagan’s “Longlegs” was the highest-grossing original horror film of the year.

1858 finds me, an unconventional young governess named Winifred Notty (Qualley), stepping into the shadows of the foreboding Ensor House, a gothic manor nestled in seclusion. My duties are twofold: to instruct the children on table etiquette and enlighten them about their family’s heritage, all while concealing my inner turmoil. As I immerse myself into life at Ensor House, a chilling sense of unease begins to pervade the air, as staff members vanish mysteriously, and the estate owners are left questioning the true nature of their new governess.

Margaret Qualley’s Career Continues to Skyrocket

Over the past decade since starting out in 2013, Qualley has swiftly built an impressive acting career. She initially caught attention with her role in HBO’s series, The Leftovers, and then made a significant impact with her breakout performance in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 hit film, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, where she portrayed the character “Pussycat.” This role earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination in 2020. Since then, Qualley has continued to work with acclaimed directors such as Yorgos Lanthimos on Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, as well as Drive-Away Dolls.

Speaking about working with Zach once more for the film Victorian Psycho, she expressed her delight, stating it was a precious opportunity. She eagerly anticipated immersing herself in the unusual universe he had crafted. Similar sentiments were shared by Wigon, who found the script to be exceptionally unique: “From its initial pages to its chilling conclusion, Victorian Psycho lived up to its promise of being an unparalleled reading experience. I’m thrilled to be part of bringing this film to reality.

Regarding Wigon, he voiced his eagerness to collaborate with Qualley once more in bringing the story of “Victorian Psycho” to reality, describing her character as a “multifaceted antihero.” Additionally, he took a brief moment to laud Feito’s script, labeling it a captivating fusion of various genres that, when combined, hint at an intriguing journey ahead.

“As soon as I discovered this thoroughly insane and unforgettable character, I knew I had to introduce moviegoers to Winifred Notty. I am beyond thrilled that the utterly fearless Margaret Qualley will be bringing this complex antihero to vivid life. Virginia Feito’s screenplay is an audacious blend of psychodrama, satire, gore and mystery. With horror aficionado producer Dan Kagan and the support of Anton and Anonymous, I cannot wait to make Victorian Psycho.”

As for the release date of “Victorian Psycho”, it hasn’t been announced yet since production has not started. Until then, you can catch Qualley in “The Substance” on Mubi on October 31, and keep an eye out for her in several upcoming films such as “Huntington”, “Blue Moon”, and “Happy Gilmore 2” next year.
