Margaret Qualley Says Her “Face Was So F***ed Up” Due to ‘The Substance’ Prosthetics

Margaret Qualley is speaking candidly about the enduring impacts she experienced from using prosthetics during her role in ‘The Substance‘.

In the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, it’s been revealed that the actress portraying Sue in the body horror movie has disclosed that her skin suffered severe damage for almost an entire year following the completion of filming.

In simpler terms, Qualley stated that during the opening credits, when the camera focuses on her skirt from below and surrounds her with palm trees, it was necessary because her face had become so damaged by then that they could no longer film close-ups of her face.

Qually explained that the character with many blemishes was actually her own skin under the makeup. As she portrays Vivian, Martha, Ruth, and Rebecca in the film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, she found it fitting. ‘It’s almost as if one of these characters will embody all my prosthetic acne,’ she said. She estimates that it took about a year for her body to fully heal from the effects of all the makeup.

The film titled “The Substance” additionally features Demi Moore and Dennis Quaid. It tells the story of a once-prominent figure in showbiz who resorts to an illegal drug – a cell-replicating substance – which provides her with a temporary, enhanced, younger version of herself as she struggles with fading celebrity status.

Previously, production designer Pierre Olivier-Persin revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that for the film, actress Qualley wore prosthetic breasts created using a mold directly from her body.

For all prosthetics, the general procedure is as follows: First, a live cast or scan is taken. Next, the desired alterations are sculpted. After that, these sculptures are molded. Then, using silicone or any other appropriate material, these molds are applied and painted.
