As a cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that I wholeheartedly stand by Margot Robbie‘s sentiments regarding the underrated masterpiece that is Babylon. The film, directed by the visionary Damien Chazelle, has been unfairly maligned as a “public failure.
Margot Robbie doesn’t understand the negative discourse surrounding her 2022 film Babylon.
In the latest episode of the “Talking Pictures” podcast, held on Tuesday, host Ben Mankiewicz pondered over the labeling of the Damien Chazelle-directed film as a “public failure”. Mankiewicz reminisced about watching the movie and questioning why it wasn’t well-received, sharing his sentiment that others might feel the same. However, Robbie, who also saw the movie, echoed Mankiewicz’s thoughts, stating, “I still can’t figure out why people don’t like this film. But let me tell you, I adore it!
Robbie expressed his confusion, saying, “I’m still puzzled about why people disliked it so much. I can only imagine that in 20 years, people might say, ‘Babylon didn’t succeed at the time? Before the release of ‘Babylon’, Damien Chazelle had already gained recognition for movies such as ‘Whiplash’ – a three-time Oscar winner and multiple award recipient, and ‘La La Land’, which won six Oscars. Therefore, it was unexpected when ‘Babylon’ garnered negative reviews. Currently, the film holds a 57% approval rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
In a 2023 conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Chazelle discussed the divided response the movie received.
After completing the movie, it essentially belongs to the viewers, encompassing both the general audience and critics alike. Everyone will undoubtedly have their unique perspectives on the film, and I believe all of these interpretations are valid. Ultimately, it becomes a global film in a sense.
He commented, “It’s beneficial to have content that encourages discussion, argument, and strong viewpoints from both sides. We were aware that this film would stir up controversy and anger some viewers, and I believe that’s a positive aspect. More films ought to provoke such reactions.
