‘Maria’ Teaser Sees Angelina Jolie as Legendary but Troubled Opera Singer

As a long-time admirer of both Angelina Jolie and Maria Callas, I am absolutely thrilled to witness this extraordinary fusion of talent and legend in the upcoming film, “Maria.” Having had the privilege of experiencing Jolie’s versatility in various roles throughout her illustrious career, I have no doubt that she will bring a depth and authenticity to portraying the troubled opera singer.

In the initial preview for the movie titled “Maria“, Angelina Jolie immerses herself in a wide range of feelings, as she assumes the role of the illustrious yet tormented opera singer Maria Callas.

The movie, helmed by Pablo Larraín (known for “Jackie” and “Spencer”), narrates the story of a celebrated American-Greek opera singer who secludes herself in Paris following years of glamour and chaos under public scrutiny. The film portrays Maria’s interpretation of this legendary opera diva in her twilight years, as she grapples with her identity and reflects on her life. This is summarized in the logline.

In a video, a voice asks, “What song would you like to sing?”, and Jolie replies at the end, “Not today.” The teaser offers glimpses into Callas’ later life in 1970s Paris, showcasing both her private moments and onstage performances.

In addition to the main cast, Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Valeria Golino, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Haluk Bilginer join the film production. The movie was brought to life by Larraín, Juan De Dios Larraín, Jonas Dornbach, and Lorenzo Mieli.

In his review following the film’s debut at the Venice Film Festival, David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter stated that the movie attempts to showcase a renowned woman, whose life was as much about sacrifice as accolades, trying to seize control and understand the truth as death draws near. However, the moments of clarity in the film are somewhat vague. Regrettably, it doesn’t reach the level of empathy and understanding that Larraín displayed in his portrayals of Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana, despite sharing similarities with those films.

Maria starts playing in select theaters in the U.S. on Nov. 27 and on Netflix Dec. 11.
