As a seasoned gamer with a heart for music and storytelling, I find myself utterly captivated by Deyra Barrera’s journey. Born in Mexico and making her way to the US in 1993, she has been singing to pay rent and make ends meet – a tale as old as time but told through the unique lens of mariachi music.
Deyra Barrera, a renowned mariachi singer from the tracks of Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX”, has revealed the tale behind her collaboration with the musician for contributing to three songs in his unexpected album.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the singer shared that the event kicked off a few weeks back when she was invited by the Los Angeles Dodgers to pay tribute to the late pitcher Fernando Valenzuela during the opening game of the World Series. “I was moved to tears, singing for my departed friend in a bustling stadium,” Barrera, who sang “El Corrido de Fernando Valenzuela” and a medley for her longtime companion, expressed. “And, Mr. Lamar was there. He heard me perform.
A few days after, Barrera found herself in Dot’s studio following an introduction by former Interscope Records exec Kimberly Barrena. Listening to the beats from GNX, she was informed about the emotions the rapper aimed to express, prompting her to jot down a few lines before his vocals were added. “I had no clue what I’d end up recording,” she admitted. “I create mariachi, not rap.” They eventually met Lamar, who appreciated her contribution to GNX. He stayed to listen to some of her recordings, expressing appreciation with “You have such a powerful voice. Thanks for coming.” Unsure of what to respond, she simply said “Lamar is a genius, a maestro. Everything he creates is magic.
Barrera, known for her appearances on “wacced out murals,” “reincarnated” and “Gloria,” is eagerly anticipating further chances to showcase her music after being a singer in the US since 1993. As she put it, “Ever since I can remember, we’ve sung to cover our rent and to have enough money for food.” She’s experienced ups and downs over many years, but her passion for singing hasn’t waned. She expressed, “I hope this helps me. The music industry is tough. I must seize this opportunity that fate has given me to progress as a singer. From now on, I need to work hard to reach more listeners, and let them know who I am.
She mentioned that Kendrick will perform at the Super Bowl Half-time show, and if only I could join him for a duet! What an amazing experience that would be,” she expressed. “I sure hope everyone recognizes that it’s Deyra Barrera who is featured on these tracks.
