In 2012, Christopher Nolan’s movie “The Dark Knight Rises” concluded the extraordinary “Dark Knight Trilogy”, with Christian Bale reprising his role as Batman against Tom Hardy’s character Bane. Although it didn’t receive as much acclaim as “The Dark Knight”, which showcased Heath Ledger’s iconic portrayal of The Joker, “The Dark Knight Rises” was still a fantastic film. However, over time, viewers have highlighted a notable inconsistency in the movie that disrupts their immersion, and this pertains to Marion Cotillard’s character, Talia al Ghul.
In an interview with Les rencontres du Papotin (French outlet), Marion Cotillard confessed that she didn’t deliver her dramatic death scene in “The Dark Knight Rises” effectively. She put it, “I fell short in that scene.” Towards the end of the movie, Cotillard’s character Miranda was unveiled as Talia Al Ghul, daughter of Ra’s al Ghul from “Batman Begins” (played by Liam Neeson), and had been secretly collaborating with Bane to seize control of Gotham for the League of Shadows. In a prolonged chase with Batman and Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), Talia al Ghul met her demise when the vehicle she was driving veered off the highway. Before succumbing, Talia had an opportunity to express some final words to Batman, but her delivery was lackluster, often criticized as a cliché in the series. Cotillard’s performance in this scene hasn’t been one of her strongest, and it has faced continuous mockery online for over a decade. The actress added:
The suitable role eluded me. I couldn’t quite figure out the right approach… It left me feeling anxious. Occasionally, we all make mistakes. In this case, I made a mistake.
Immediately after that scene was shown, fans flocked online to debate why that particular take was chosen for the final version of the film. In previous comments, Marion Cotillard has discussed her performance in The Dark Knight Rises, but director Christopher Nolan has remained tight-lipped about why that specific take was selected.
‘The Dark Knight’ Features a Hidden A-List Cameo
Besides his knack for creating both realistic filmmaking and complex storylines, Christopher Nolan is known for attracting groups of renowned actors to star in his films. Alongside Bale, Hardy, Cotillard, Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Ben Mendelssohn, The Dark Knight Rises also boasted another popular A-list actor who hadn’t quite broken into the mainstream at that time.
In a memorable sequence from “The Dark Knight Rises,” Bane attacks an investment firm and brutally hits an unlucky trader on a desk; this victim turned out to be Glen Powell, who has since risen to fame as one of Hollywood’s top leading men. He is best known for his roles in films such as “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Hit Man,” “Twisters,” and “Anyone But You.” Now, Powell is preparing for what could be his most significant role yet, as he will star in the upcoming remake of Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man.
