Mark Dacascos Stars in Exciting Kickboxer Sequel with Epic Martial Arts Fight Scenes

In a continuation of the Kickboxer series, Mark Dacascos took over as the main character in Redemption: Kickboxer 5. Famously known as The Muscles from Brussels, Jean-Claude Van Damme has starred in numerous martial arts movies, and although Bloodsport is generally considered more iconic, both films have gained significant popularity. This notability led to Van Damme reprising his role twice – first in 2012 for Kickboxer: Vengeance, and then again in 2019 for Kickboxer: Retaliation.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve got to say that Jean-Claude Van Damme’s comeback certainly reignited the flame under Kickboxer, but it wasn’t as if the franchise was on its deathbed without him. Truth be told, it had taken a bit of a rest years back, but even then, it didn’t shy away from trying to find its footing with other actors leading the way. Interestingly enough, Kickboxer didn’t just take a break; it had four sequels between Jean-Claude Van Damme’s debut as Kurt Sloane in 1989 and his return to the series in 2012. One of these attempts to keep Kickboxer alive without Van Damme featured none other than martial arts legend, Mark Dacascos – the same actor who graced our screens in movies like John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum later on.

How Redemption: Kickboxer 5 Is Connected To The 1989 Original

Kickboxer 5 Follows A Friend Of Kurt Sloane’s Brother

The seven Kickboxer films are connected through the central character, Kurt Sloane. Unlike a continuous storyline that carries over from one movie to another, Kurt Sloane is the main character in the initial film and the final two installments of the series. Although he doesn’t appear directly in the second, third, fourth, or fifth films, his tale sets the stage for their events. In Kickboxer 2, it’s disclosed that Jean-Claude Van Damme’s character and his on-screen brother, Eric Sloane, perished after the original Kickboxer’s events. Interestingly, the Sloane family of martial artists has a third member – David Sloane, portrayed by Sasha Mitchell.

In the Kickboxer series, Sasha Mitchell takes over as the protagonist from Jean-Claude Van Damme in movies like Kickboxer 2, Kickboxer 3, and Kickboxer 4. However, much like how Kickboxer 2 abruptly passed the role to Mitchell, the fifth movie, Redemption: Kickboxer 5, swiftly replaces the character David Sloane with Mark Dacascos’ Matt Reeves following his untimely demise at the start of the film. As a fellow martial artist and friend of David’s, Matt learns of his death and tracks down the culprits, sparking an intense series of martial arts battles that dominate Redemption: Kickboxer 5.

Why Kickboxer 5 Is Worth Watching

Redemption: Kickboxer 5 Features Several Memorable Fight Scenes

It’s true that the sequels of the “Kickboxer” series aren’t particularly unique, as many action films starring Jean-Claude Van Damme have spawned franchise sequels, such as “Timecop,” “Hard Target,” and “Cyborg.” Most of these – including the initial three sequels to “Kickboxer” – are unremarkable additions to the martial arts genre. However, one exception to this is “Redemption: Kickboxer 5,” which, despite being a sequel in name only to a classic martial arts film that lacks its original star, is often overlooked and doesn’t receive enough recognition for its exceptional martial arts action sequences.

In the film “John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” it’s clear that Mark Dacascos is an accomplished martial artist, a skill set he has consistently displayed throughout his acting career. The movie “Redemption: Kickboxer 5” capitalizes on Dacascos’ expertise in the Brazilian martial art of capoeira, offering numerous, expertly choreographed fight scenes where he displays an array of stunning moves.

The storyline for the Kickboxer sequel, set in the 1990s, follows a familiar pattern often seen in martial arts revenge films. It’s filled with corny one-liners and typical bad guys, but it thrives in this conventionality. The film starring Mark Dacascos doesn’t strive for seriousness or originality; instead, it focuses on providing a lighthearted, action-packed revenge tale where the charming protagonist battles his way past hordes of mercenaries to avenge his friend’s death.
