Mark Hamill returns alongside Mike Flanagan in a unique take on a Stephen King adaptation, featuring newcomer Benjamin Pajak, titled “Chuck’s Life“. Most notably recognized for his roles as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars series and voicing the Joker across various DC animated productions, Hamill made his first appearance with Flanagan in Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher miniseries. His portrayal of Arthur Pym, the Usher family fixer, received high acclaim. He is also set to continue his collaboration with King for another adaptation, this time of the long-awaited novel The Long Walk.
In “The Life of Chuck,” a 2020 novella by King, we follow the story of Chuck, tracing his life backwards from old age and a seemingly apocalyptic world to his childhood years. Abandoned as an orphan, he was taken in by his grandparents. In the movie adaptation, Pajak, Flanagan’s son Cody, and Jacob Tremblay all portray younger versions of Chuck at different stages, while Hamill plays the role of Albie, Chuck’s adoptive grandfather.
Looking forward to the premiere of the movie, ScreenRant had a chat with Mark Hamill and Benjamin Pajak about “The Life of Chuck”. The pair reminisced about the innovative way dance was employed in the film to delve into its main character, sharing anecdotes like how Hamill unexpectedly joined set during one of these dance scenes. Additionally, Hamill spoke about his numerous partnerships with Flanagan and how this director has reignited his passion for acting.
Hamill’s Ambition For Acting “Had Just Dropped” Before His First Collaboration With Flanagan
“His Sets Are Relaxing And A Big Family.”
For several decades, Hamill has been a prominent figure in the entertainment industry following his debut in “Star Wars.” However, compared to his voiceover work, on-screen appearances have been less frequent. The star confessed that there was a time when he contemplated retirement, expressing a longing for more leisurely activities like spending time with his dogs in the backyard, searching beaches with a metal detector, and assertively telling people to stay off his property. He also admitted that his ambition had dwindled and he no longer felt the passion he once did.
Hamill expressed that he rarely gets considered for intense, heartless, soul-devoid villain roles except in voiceovers, which he now perceives as “typical.” Instead, acting on camera feels more “unique” to him. Moreover, he had a fantastic time collaborating with Flanagan on the 2023 horror miniseries and rediscovered his passion for acting. He thought, “Yes, it can be enjoyable. I found the spark that I’d misplaced,” and acknowledged, “I owe him a lot.
Additionally, this encounter prompted Hamill to eagerly join the cast of The Life of Chuck, regardless of not having prior knowledge about the content. He commended the filmmaker for being a “warm and kind individual” who is clear about his project expectations. Hamill described his sets as a “relaxing family environment,” where there’s no stress, shouting, or cursing. Instead, he creates an atmosphere that encourages everyone to deliver their best work.
Pajak Was Surprised When Hamill Showed Up During His Dance Scene
Hamill Was Also “Bowled Over” By His Young Co-Stars’ Talent
Throughout Chuck’s life in the movie, dance has been a recurring theme, and each portrayal of him demonstrated distinct dancing abilities. For Pajak, he admitted to experiencing some apprehension before filming his scene, but was taken aback when Hamill unexpectedly joined them on the day they filmed it. As he put it, Hamill had “spare time” and was eager to watch the scene where he dances in high school with Samantha Sloyan as the teacher, but also made sure not to intrude, so as not to disrupt the filming.
According to Hamill, he would wait until his co-actors were prepared for their scene, and the Second Assistant Director would signal, “It’s time to go in now.” He then added that what resonated with him was the fact that they paired him with a girl who was significantly taller than him, just as it had happened to him at a similar age. [Laughs] That’s so spot-on, he said.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I couldn’t help but sing the praises of my co-star from Life of Chuck. His versatility left me speechless! Not only could he carry a tune and move gracefully on the dance floor, but he even knits!
When someone asked if I took on the role of Luke training young Jedis with Pajak, I had to admit that there was nothing I could teach him. Instead, it was me who felt like I could learn from him, given his impressive array of talents. “Let me tell you,” I said, “without a hint of exaggeration, he’s got an enormous career ahead of him.” He can tackle any genre – drama or comedy. The sky’s the limit for this guy!
