As a gamer and avid fan of NCIS, I’m excited about the new prequel series “NCIS: Origins” and the introduction of Austin Stowell as young Leroy Jethro Gibbs. However, I was initially taken aback by the long-haired version of Gibbs that was revealed in an early-look photo. But upon seeing the Instagram reel with Stowell sporting a more traditional Gibbs haircut, my excitement has been renewed.
Paraphrasing: Introducing a beloved character as their younger self in a prequel setup can pose challenges, particularly when the figure is as recognized as Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs from “NCIS.” A recent Instagram reel for “NCIS: Origins” showcases Austin Stowell undergoing a 1990s-era Gibbs haircut and donning the character’s wardrobe. The prequel series seems intent on emulating Gibbs’ essence through Stowell’s portrayal rather than replicating Harmon’s distinctively parted hairstyle.
As a gamer, I’d say: I must admit, Gibbs’ new short-hired look is quite a change from what we’re used to. But add in Stowell’s stern demeanor, clean-shaven face, and no-nonsense attire, and there’s still a hint of that classic Gibbs vibe peeking through. With “NCIS: Origins” bringing back Robert Taylor as Jackson Gibbs from “Longmire,” and Vera Strickland (Roma Maffia) reprising her role, it’s clear Stowell isn’t the only one stepping into the shoes of a ’90s NCIS character. It’s an intriguing blend of old and new that keeps the characters recognizable while transporting us back in time.
Young Gibbs isn’t so long-haired after all
It’s important to point out that Austin Stowell’s portrayal of “Origins” Gibbs in Instagram reels contrasts significantly with Mark Harmon’s appearance on the show. In May, a sneak peek photo unveiled that Gibbs would sport long, flowing locks in the early stages, which is quite distinct from his shorter hairstyle shown in the recent clip. This drastic change might have been an experiment to gauge audience reaction or simply depicting how Gibbs looked prior to joining the NCIS academy and getting a new haircut.
It makes perfect sense for “NCIS: Origins” to maintain a straightforward appearance for young Gibbs since creating a convincing prequel version of this iconic character relies less on visual cues compared to other characters, like Abby Sciuto. Instead, the show may rely more heavily on storytelling and Mark Harmon’s narration to bring a believable young Gibbs to life.
