In simpler terms, Mark Leckey doesn’t view ordinary things like highway bridges, street lamps, or road signs as commonplace; instead, he sees them as portals to extraordinary, ecstatic experiences that transcend the self. Through his work in video, sculpture, and performance, Leckey turns the everyday into something magical by connecting music, dance, and a city’s rhythm with the sublime.
In the heart of Paris, Lafayette Anticipations is hosting Leckey’s latest solo exhibition titled As Above So Below. This extensive showcase spans from the late 90s right up to today, offering a diverse range of works. From the iconic British youth film Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore, released in 1999, to more recent pieces like Mercy I Cry City (2024), and approximately 20 other artworks in between. The exhibition focuses on the theme of ecstasy and the ecstatic, providing insights into the artist’s personal disorienting experiences – intense emotional moments that seemed to blur the lines of reality for him.
As a devoted admirer, I find myself captivated by Leckey’s work that mirrors his enchantment with the Middle Ages. His art seems to dance between the acidic and the sacred, echoing the intriguing cosmic bond between the earthly and the divine, the visible and the invisible. It’s as if he’s discovered reflections of this celestial link in our modern world, where smartphones and artificial intelligence breathe a mystical life into inanimate objects.
In a recent interview with Art Basel, the artist expressed that “ecstasy,” originally, means being removed from oneself, venturing into the unknown and unfamiliar in a bewildering, frightening, or perhaps awe-inspiring manner. This sentiment seems to resonate with the current state of the world, as it appears to be experiencing an overwhelming sense of ecstasy.
As Above So Below is now on view in Paris through July 20.
