Mark Ruffalo Joins ‘CODA’ Director Sian Heder’s ‘Being Heumann’

Mark Ruffalo will take on a significant part in the upcoming movie “Being Heumann,” directed by Academy Award-winner Sian Heder.

Mark Ruffalo has signed up to star alongside Ruth Madeley in the Apple Original Films project based on Judy Heumann’s acclaimed memoir. In this production, Ruffalo will portray Joseph Califano while Madeley takes on the lead role as Judy Heumann herself.

Heumann (Madeley) spearheaded a movement of more than one hundred disabled individuals who staged a 28-day protest at the San Francisco Federal Building in 1977. Their objective was to persuade the government to enforce Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which mandates accessibility for all federal facilities. The protesters pledged to remain until their demand was met.

Jenny Heder spearheads Apple Studios’ feature productions under her company deal, also functioning as the producer. Alongside Rebekah Taussig, she co-authored a script inspired by Heumann’s 2020 memoir. David Permut from Permut Productions and Kevin Walsh from The Walsh Company are among the producers, together with John W. Beach and Kevin Cleary of Gravity Squared Entertainment, who represent Heumann’s management.

In 2023, at the age of 75, Heumann is serving as an executive producer, working alongside Kristen Joiner, co-author of Being Heumann, Diana Pokorny, and Jim Lebrecht on a project together.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but marvel at the incredible accomplishments of director Sia Heder. One of her notable collaborations with Apple was the direction of the heartwarming film “CODA” in 2021, which swept the Oscars with wins for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur), and Best Adapted Screenplay, a testament to the power of her script. Moreover, she also served as an executive producer on the captivating series “Little America.” Simply put, Heder’s work continues to leave an indelible mark in the world of cinema.

Actor Mark Ruffalo, who has been nominated for four Oscars, was last seen in “Poor Things” and “Mickey 17”. In the coming year, he will feature in “Crime 101”, alongside Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry. Ruffalo is managed by Lighthouse Entertainment, UTA, Relevant, and Keith Klevan.
