You might recognize Mark Wahlberg from his recent role as a mad, bald aviator in “Flight Risk,” or perhaps you know him better as Marky Mark, Dirk Diggler, the character who isn’t Ted in “Ted,” or the “Entourage” guy. However, you may not be familiar with Wahlberg’s significant contributions to documentary filmmaking through Unrealistic Ideas, a production company he co-founded with Archie Gips and Stephen Levinson.

Unrealistic Ideas has been responsible for producing projects like “McMillion$,” “MoviePass,” “MovieCrash,” “Gold,” “Lies and Videotape,” “Murders at Starved Rock,” and many more documentaries. Their latest creation is the Amazon Prime Video docuseries “Spy High,” an intriguing yet unsettling exploration of a spy ring originating from Lower Merion High School during what became known as WebCamGate. This documentary offers a unique blend of wildness and intimacy, reminiscent of “Citizenfour Jr.

This series is helmed by Jody McVeigh-Schultz, a director who has collaborated with Mark Wahlberg and Unrealistic Ideas previously. As you might guess, Mark Wahlberg is quite occupied managing numerous businesses and producing blockbuster films; however, he’s particularly supportive of documentary filmmaking and projects, as Jody McVeigh-Schultz shared.

Mark advocates passionately for compelling narratives, focusing on crafting stories that appeal to a broad audience, not just documentary enthusiasts. At Unrealistic Ideas, our goal is to produce tales that are engaging yet approachable, even for those who aren’t deeply invested in documentaries. This story, while intense, offers an enjoyable viewing experience, with elements of absurdity and a ‘Pop’ sensibility that sets it apart from other documentaries. Essentially, we aim to create captivating content that is both watchable and aligns with the Unrealistic Ideas ethos.

McVeigh-Schultz mentioned that he’s now working on his third venture with Unrealistic Ideas, having previously served as an editor there. They later appointed him as a director, significantly contributing to the kickoff of his directing career by trusting him with directing tasks after initially hiring him as an editor. He also acknowledged two influential figures at the company, Archie Gips and Dave Wendell, who identified his potential for the project from the get-go and encouraged him to take it on. Moreover, they are active Executive Producers who have made the project exceptional.

Down the Digital Rabbit Hole of ‘Spy High’

In approximately 2010, Lower Merion High School served as an ideal setting for this documentary, as it presented a rich backdrop of social issues such as class disparities and racial tensions. The school, being upper-class, had distributed laptops among its 2,000 students to use at home, unbeknownst to them that these devices were capturing their private moments in their bedrooms. McVeigh-Schultz, who hails from Philadelphia and recalls the WebCamGate incident, emerged as the most suitable candidate to direct this tale following his experience as a supervising editor on McMillion$.

McVeigh-Schultz stated, “I was well-informed about the subject. The high school central to our narrative is renowned due to Kobe Bryant attending it. You see, he excelled in high school, became a superstar, and moved directly to the NBA. Later, around 2010, the school gained more notoriety for this particular story.” Although I was based in Los Angeles at that time, I still caught wind of it. [Unrealistic Ideas] approached me and asked, “Have you heard anything about this?” And indeed, I had.

McVeigh-Schultz explained, “I was quite familiar with the location, but the topic itself, along with the suburban intrigue and privacy concerns, really captivated me. From a director’s perspective, I enjoy documentaries that seem predictable based on what’s been reported, but when you delve deeper, the narrative takes an entirely different turn. Here, that’s exactly what happened.” The filmmaker went on to say:

Blake Robbins is well-known for being at the heart of a major media controversy. Interestingly, around 400 images of Blake were found, along with tens of thousands of other students’ images. This discovery led us to investigate further, like going down a rabbit hole. Besides Blake, there were other victims involved in this incident, some of whom we spoke to, both those who were already public figures and those who preferred to remain anonymous.

McVeigh-Schultz remarked, “This tale was likely assumed to be familiar to locals, but they’ll view it from a fresh perspective even if they thought they knew every detail.” He’s correct; Spy High takes unexpected turns.
