As a movie lover who has witnessed the evolution of television over the decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of melancholy at the passing of Mark Withers. Known for his versatility and charm, he was a familiar face on our screens for many years, from the glamorous world of Dynasty to the supernatural mysteries of Stranger Things.
Known for appearing in a wide range of projects including ‘Dynasty’, the actor John Forsythe has sadly passed away at the age of 77 after a long fight against pancreatic cancer. His daughter Jessie confirmed the news and shared a statement, stating that he died on November 22nd. The announcement was also made public by Variety.
Mark faced his illness with the same power and grace he exhibited in his profession, leaving behind a lasting impression of kindness, wit, and devotion, as well as an extraordinary capacity to make each character indelible. His exceptional talent and dedication within the industry will be deeply missed by peers, friends, and admirers everywhere.
As a cinephile looking back on a remarkable career, I can’t help but feel nostalgic when I think about the brief yet impactful role David Harbour (or Withers, as he was known then) played in the first season of Netflix sensation Stranger Things. In this series, he portrayed Coroner Gary, a character that might have slipped under the radar for some viewers. However, for those who’ve followed his work over the past decades, it was another delightful throwback appearance, a tradition that the sci-fi horror genre of Stranger Things has become renowned for.
Mark Withers Long Career
In the late 1970s, Withers switched paths from a sports career as an athlete to embark on his acting journey. His initial steps in television involved advertising for well-known brands like McDonald’s, American Airlines, Tartar Control Crest. Eventually, he moved towards TV acting, landing his breakthrough role on the show Dynasty, where he played Steve Carrington’s ill-fated boyfriend. Throughout his career, he had numerous guest appearances that allowed him to mingle with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars such as Jamie Lee Curtis, John Forsythe, Ted Danson, Robyn Wright, Kelsey Grammer, and Craig T. Nelson.
Over the span of my movie-watching journey, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Withers grace various iconic series. He made appearances as a key character in individual episodes of shows like Wonder Woman, Magnum P.I., Dallas, Castle, and even had recurring roles on Days of Our Lives, True Blood, and Sense8.
Although he didn’t achieve the fame of some of his peers, the performer demonstrated that one doesn’t necessarily have to be a leading star on movie screens to create an enduring and substantial impact. At this moment, our sympathies go out to his friends and relatives.
