Mark Zuckerberg Clarifies Reports About His Bunker in Hawaii: “That’s Just Like a Little Shelter”

As a seasoned gamer with a knack for survival games and post-apocalyptic settings, I can’t help but feel a mix of intrigue and amusement at Mark Zuckerberg‘s latest venture – or rather, his “little shelter” as he calls it.

Mark Zuckerberg recently spoke out regarding rumors suggesting the construction of an extensive underground shelter on his Hawaii estate.

During an interview with Bloomberg, the CEO of Meta was inquired about a report published by WIRED last year which suggested the existence of a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter beneath his home on Kauai.

He explained to Emily Chang from The Circuit, “It’s essentially a small refuge, though you can label it a hurricane shelter if you prefer. I feel like people have exaggerated the situation, making it seem as if our entire property was some sort of apocalyptic bunker, which is completely untrue.

Additionally, he clarified that their property in Hawaii, shared with his wife Priscilla Chan, serves as a ranch, and his ambition is to strive towards producing the finest beef globally.

He found Kauai incredibly enjoyable, sharing, “Our idea is to create a self-sustaining system. We cultivate macadamia nuts for their shells, which we use to make macadamia meal. Then, we brew beer with the leftovers as a way to help them consume more. It’s quite amusing.

Following the revelation about Zuckerberg’s underground shelter, other wealthy individuals have been building their own safety structures as well. In light of increasing global conflicts and domestic gun violence, the rich are taking self-preservation measures more aggressively than before.

Ron Hubbard, CEO of Atlas Survival Shelters based in Texas, expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that business has been incredibly hectic and it feels like the phone never stops ringing. He mentioned that the recent news about tech CEOs purchasing bunkers sparked a surge in demand.

Robert Vicino, founder of Vivos based in Del Mar, California, which constructs underground survival shelters, mirrored Hubbard’s thoughts. “With Zuckerberg revealing his plans, it makes people who are similarly influential or close to that level begin to ponder, ‘Oh dear, if he’s doing this, perhaps he has knowledge I don’t possess, maybe I should look into this for myself,'” Vicino stated at the time.

Beyond the large-scale bunker, Mark Zuckerberg’s $100 million estate, often referred to as Koolau Ranch spanning about 1,400 acres, is also planned to include independent energy and food sources, reports WIRED. Including the land acquisition, this project is expected to cost over $270 million in total.

According to a report released in December 2023, the project appears to have used legal strategies, political connections, and, on occasion, neglected the concerns of local communities, according to certain sources.
