Martin Margiela's “Blinds” is His First Monumental Outdoor Sculpture

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for both digital and real-life puzzles, I must say that Martin Margiela’s “Blinds” installation in Antwerp is nothing short of captivating. Having spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, where reflections can be both a blessing and a curse, I find a peculiar sense of familiarity in this piece.

In the bustling Schuttershofstraat of Antwerp, renowned fashion designer Martin Margiela recently unveiled a fresh piece of artwork. Having departed from the realm of fashion, he’s now directing his talents towards the art world and made his artistic debut in 2020.

Entitled “Blinds,” this is Martine Margiela’s debut outdoor sculpture, characterized by a colossal, circular design with a mirrored surface. This creation is conceived as part of Middleheim Museum’s Kunst in de Stad (Art in the City) initiative. The installation subtly evokes window blinds, yet carries an extra veil of enigma that aligns with Margiela’s cryptic style.

As described by Middleheim Museum, the reflective artwork subtly echoes the storefronts that line the street. People walking by can catch a peek of what’s displayed as well as a reflection of themselves, thereby exploring themes like “observation and being observed”, “attraction and shimmer”, and the enigmatic nature of urban existence.
