As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for indie cinema and a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling, I can confidently say that A24 has been delivering some of the most profound and thought-provoking films in recent years. Their latest accolade comes from none other than Martin Scorsese, who praised Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow as “emotionally and psychologically powerful.
This year has been a successful one for A24, an independent film distributor that’s famous for releasing top-notch movies. With films like “Civil War,” “MaXXXine,” “Love Lies Bleeding,” and the recent horror sensation “Heretic,” A24’s reputation has only grown stronger. Adding to their list of accolades, esteemed director Martin Scorsese has offered high praise for Jane Schoenbrun’s film “I Saw the TV Glow.
Back in May, I had the pleasure of watching the movie “I Saw the TV Glow” and was thoroughly impressed by it. In a recent interview with The Canadian Press, Martin Scorsese couldn’t help but express his admiration for the film, describing it as both “emotionally and psychologically powerful.
Two weeks ago, I watched a film titled ‘I Saw the TV Glow’ that left a deep impact on me both emotionally and psychologically. It was profoundly moving and lingered with me in an unusual way. I hadn’t known who its director was, but now I do – it’s Jane Schoenbrun.
Jane Schoenbrun Reacts to Martin Scorsese’s Comments About ‘I Saw the TV Glow’
As someone deeply immersed in the world of cinema, I find myself astonished to share that despite having been a part of the industry for over a decade and contributing significantly as a producer, I Saw the TV Glow marks Schoenbrun’s second feature film directorial endeavor. While they did steer the 2018 documentary A Self-Induced Hallucination, it wasn’t until the 2021 release of We’re All Going to the World’s Fair that they took the reins for a theatrical production.
Currently, they’re receiving acclaim from Martin Scorsese, renowned for films like “Raging Bull”, “Taxi Driver”, “Gangs of New York”, and “The Departed”. Needless to say, that must feel fantastic! Indeed, Schoenbrun didn’t hold back on expressing their joy upon learning this positive news. In a post on X, the director exclaimed, “‘I JUST GOT A FEVER AND LAID DOWN ON THE GROUND AND STARTED PANTING,’” demonstrating their enthusiasm over Scorsese’s endorsement of “I Saw the TV Glow”. They further shared a more heartfelt message about what his words meant to them.
This past year, I attended a talk by Marty, who reminisced about his beloved movie-watching experiences, prior to the screening of BLACK NARCISSUS at @MoMAFilm. It’s seldom that I’ve felt so profoundly connected to a heritage, a custom, and an intertwined spiritual journey.
If we were in Schoenbrun’s position, we’d share their excitement, but the question on everyone’s mind is: what’s next? Fortunately, we have an answer. The “Screen Trilogy,” which includes “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair” and “I Saw the TV Glow,” has a third and final installment coming up. This will be Schoenbrun’s debut novel, titled “Public Access Afterworld,” published by Random House. Initially conceived as a three-season television series, this book is described as an extraordinary fusion of literary fantasy, growing-up stories, sci-fi, and horror. This might not be the news that film enthusiasts want to hear, but for Schoenbrun, it marks the culmination of their creative journey so far, and we applaud them! In these uncertain times when everything seems to be falling apart, we need more courageous creators like them.
