The 2005 movie ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ is considered one of Hollywood’s top entries in the spy genre. In this film, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie portrayed a married couple who were unaware that they were secret agents working for opposing agencies. This misunderstanding led to them attempting to eliminate each other, until they discovered the truth and thwarted a terrorist scheme.
In the year 2024, a Prime Video television series captivated audiences with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine portraying spouses secretly working in the intelligence field, undertaking missions together. Notably, their affection for each other consistently surpassed their dedication to their work, resulting in a heartwarming narrative. Moving forward to 2025, a spy movie takes this concept further by featuring two well-known Marvel actors. This film, centered around married couples navigating the world of espionage, is expected to introduce an unexpected twist that would leave even the most ardent James Bond fans intrigued.
Black Bag Stars Marvel’s Magneto and Hela Actors
Black Bag Uses Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as Conflicted Spies
The film features Michael Fassbender as George and Cate Blanchett as Kathryn, portraying a married couple who work for MI6 in Britain. However, they find themselves caught up in a cover-up situation. Their superior, Meacham, instructs George to question a series of individuals under suspicion of leaking a program named Severus. If this program falls into Russian hands and is exploited, it could lead to nuclear accidents, invasions, and armed conflicts.
In a clever move, George manages to trick Kathryn and various pairs – namely James and Zoe, as well as Freddie and Clarissa – into attending a dinner where he poses questions to them. It later transpires that fans suspect Kathryn the most, given her suspicious activities such as having a secret bank account and clandestine meetings with unknown agents. George also discovers that religious individuals Zoe and Freddie might be involved in an affair with each other.
Black Bag Critical Reception
IMDb Rating | Metacritic Rating | Rotten Tomatoes Score |
7/10 | 85% | 96% |
After Meacham suffers a heart attack that evening and passes away, George discovers that the traitor is undoubtedly frightened. As the story unfolds, numerous unexpected events take place. It’s eventually uncovered that Arthur, Kathryn’s superior, and James were working together to expose Severus. Once George pursued the misleading signs they set up and followed Kathryn’s leads, they allowed the Russians to capture Severus, ignite wars, and push MI6 to collaborate with various governments for the purpose of demolishing and rebuilding the world.
Black Bag’s Villain Is a Former James Bond
Pierce Brosnan Is an Evil Version of M Who Wants a Nuclear Apocalypse
The key point here is that Arthur, portrayed by, has a significant role. He appeared in various films such as “GoldenEye,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” “The World Is Not Enough,” and “Die Another Day” from 1995 to 2002. In these movies, he battled terrorists and traitors within MI6, giving the term “Black Bag” a new dimension. He is incredibly powerful, creating an air of intimidation towards Kathryn and attempting to manipulate her perceptions (gaslight). Essentially, Arthur can be seen as a villainous counterpart to Bond’s superior, M.
Later on, George and Kathryn enlist the assistance of Zoe and Freddie to lure James out for another dinner encounter.
In the tragic turn of events, I found myself becoming a pawn in someone else’s game, with James meeting an untimely end and being buried. However, George and Kathryn stood firm, warning those involved never to misuse them or manipulate others.
Fate had it that Zoe overheard this plot from a tipsy James one evening, which led her and Freddie to devise a strategy for George and Kathryn to confront James and Arthur. Fortunately, George and Kathryn anticipated the moves of everyone involved, even outsmarting Zoe and Freddie in their efforts to safeguard their identities.
When confronted by Arthur, Kathryn displays compassion towards him. Despite her respect for him, she despises his readiness to sacrifice millions for a new world. It’s a plot reminiscent of Hydra in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She advises Arthur to step away from the situation, either by hiding or ending his own life. Kathryn and George rekindle their bond, confirming that they are meant for each other.
In a surprising twist, Fassbender’s portrayal in the film suggests he could convincingly take on the role of James Bond. His character is smooth, sophisticated, and discerning about allegiances, subtly echoing Ethan Hunt from Mission: Impossible. Black Bag, with its intricate plots reminiscent of movies like Ocean’s Eleven and Presence, seems to be right up Fassbender’s alley. To pull off this mentally challenging role that contradicts the conventional Bond image, he required a strong and dynamic presence, much like Pierce Brosnan.
Black Bag is in theaters and available on Digital.
