MARVEL Future Fight Interview: Netmarble’s Terry Lee discusses the action RPG’s 10 year anniversary event and future plans

It’s comforting in today’s world, where numerous well-known games shut down for seemingly minor or hard-to-believe reasons, to witness MARVEL Future Fight reaching its 10th anniversary. This is especially heartening because it’s a mobile game, and in an environment where publishers often seem to overlook longevity when considering other titles.

Over the past decade, I’ve been consistently impressed by Netmarble’s dedication to enhancing their superhero RPG. They’ve introduced numerous beloved characters, innovative game modes, and themed events that keep me hooked, such as the latest Thunderbolts update. As a token of their appreciation for reaching this significant milestone, players like myself are being showered with anniversary rewards and bonuses this month.

Recently, we got the opportunity to chat with Terry Lee, the Business Division Director at Netmarble, discussing Marvel Future Fight’s upcoming anniversary celebrations and what lies ahead for this popular RPG game.

Let us start by asking how it feels to see MARVEL Future Fight celebrate its 10th anniversary?

Few mobile games have managed to stay active worldwide for more than ten years. I’m immensely proud of the MARVEL Future Fight team for achieving this remarkable milestone. Above all, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each player for their consistent dedication and affection throughout the years.

In which countries has it been especially popular?

Marvel Future Fight sees enthusiastic play in more than 170 nations worldwide, with the USA and South Korea leading the pack as the most active regions. Gamers hailing from Asia, America, and Europe are among those who remain captivated by this popular title.

What has been the driving force behind the game’s 10-year run?

To ensure lasting success for our game set in the Marvel Universe, it’s essential to bridge the emotional gap between what fans anticipate from the universe and the gameplay experience. This has been achieved through regular, substantial updates that maintain consistency and meaning over time.

How many heroes and uniforms have been released to date? Which ones are most popular?

Ever since the update influenced by MARVEL Studios’ Thunderbolts*, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the game with an impressive roster of 274 heroes and a stunning array of 528 uniforms! The standout ensemble so far has got to be Luna Snow’s “Summer Lilac,” unveiled in August 2023. As a die-hard fan, I can attest that Luna Snow is one of the game’s most recognizable heroes, and this vibrant summer uniform has left players spellbound with its distinctive hue and exceptional performance.

Luna Snow is indeed iconic. How was she created?

Luna Snow was born out of a partnership with MARVEL, where the idea was to create an original character specifically for MARVEL Future Fight. Given our team’s location in Korea, it seemed fitting to develop a Korean hero. Additionally, MARVEL sought a unique backstory, which resulted in Luna Snow being conceptualized as a K-pop idol and singer. Now, she has become an integral part of the MARVEL Universe, garnering more affection than we had initially anticipated.

Are there plans for a major overhaul or remaster of the game?

Instead of a massive revamp such as a complete remake, we’re concentrating on incorporating fresh gameplay modes and enhancing user experience. Currently under construction is an exciting new Epic Quest, which we plan to roll out in the latter part of this year.

What’s being done for the 10th anniversary to help new and returning players?

We’re giving out substantial bonuses, which include a Tier-4 Hero Chooser and 10,000 Crystals. For new players who log in consecutively for seven days, we have powerful characters like Tier-3 Iron Man ready to boost their teams swiftly. Plus, we’ve got discounted uniform and dimension chest events happening to speed up advancement. On top of that, we invite you to join the “Agent Training Center” friend referral event for additional perks.

In this version, I tried to maintain the original meaning while using simpler language and more natural sentence structures.

Can you share the mid- and long-term roadmap? Any hints on upcoming characters or content?

To ensure the game remains approachable for beginners, we’re considering various enhancements aimed at simplifying its learning curve. Regarding fresh content, we’ll keep rolling out thematic updates as planned. Without revealing too much, I’m excited to hint that a popular theme from last year is making a comeback—so keep your eyes peeled!

Concerning advanced development stages, we initiated Tier-4 roughly three years back. However, a significant number of characters are still advancing through Tier-2 and Tier-3. As a result, we’re not presently considering the addition of Tier-5 or comparable content in the near term.

Any final words for the players?

Achieving ten years marks a significant achievement, but we’re confident that the growth potential for MARVEL Future Fight as a MARVEL Universe game is far from over. With ongoing Marvel narratives unfolding across movies, television, and comics, we plan to keep expanding with themed updates and introducing fresh characters.

Our incredible voyage has been made possible by the enthusiasm and backing of our players, whom we’re immensely thankful for. As we approach our 15th (and potentially 20th) anniversary, rest assured that our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us.
