Marvel Rivals Devs Like Introducing Unknown ‘Curve Ball’ Characters

In Marvel Rivals, you’ll find well-known figures such as Iron Man and Captain America, but it also includes lesser-known characters straight out of the comic books, including Magik and Jeff the Land Shark.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that Marvel Rivals could easily continue adding well-known heroes to their roster. However, what sets this game apart is the developers’ decision to introduce less popular characters, keeping the game fresh and exciting for us players.

70% Hits, 30% Curve Balls

At GDC 2025, Marvel Rivals’ executive producer Danny Koo chats with PC Gamer, sharing that around 70% of their characters are popular favorites such as Iron Man and Captain America. To keep things intriguing, he adds that they also include a few surprises – some heroes you may not have heard of yet.

As a devoted admirer, I haven’t received specific insights yet from Koo regarding potential candidates for the roster, but whispers indicate that Rivals could be introducing some heroes who aren’t part of the MCU. Rumors point towards characters like Hit-Monkey and the unconventionally named Paste-Pot Pete (or its contemporary alias—Trapster) joining the fray.

Trust the Process

As a devoted fan, I can tell you that when it comes to creating a new hero, Koo lays out an intricate process the team follows. Essentially, they develop a character’s history and personality, incorporating comic references in their actions, and pass this information onto the design team. The design team then brainstorms ideas, and together we decide on the hero’s core traits. Once we’re satisfied with our creation, it moves into production.

As creators, once we’ve crafted and fine-tuned our new character, the marketing team steps in to present them to players. Koo adds, “Then, the marketing crew ponders, ‘How do we introduce this fresh face to newcomers unaware of their realm?’ Do we have to clarify things? A comic historian is brought onboard.

Thus far, Marvel Rivals has successfully introduced lesser-known characters such as Luna Snow and Squirrel Girl to players. Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe struggles to bring these characters to the silver screen, Marvel Rivals offers a fantastic platform for fans to develop affection for these characters without needing full knowledge of their backgrounds.

Who Else is Coming?

Fans eagerly anticipate what new characters might appear in the upcoming season, as the first one primarily centered around the Fantastic Four.

Previously, there have been leaks for figures such as Ultron and Blade. However, it’s being whispered that the upcoming season might mark the beginning of Mutants, potentially bringing characters like Emma Frost and Jean Grey into play. There are even whispers of a map of the X-Mansion being included.

Until NetEase decides to make the official reveal, all fans can really do is wait.
