As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but sing the praises of Marvel Rivals! This game has me hooked with its irresistible gameplay mechanics and stunning character designs that leap off the screen. What truly sets it apart is its ability to spark interest in Marvel comic books, something not even the blockbuster MCU movies could manage.
So it’s not that surprising to see how Marvel Rivals is now inspiring current Marvel Comics.
As a passionate fan, I can trace it all back to the straightforward character designs of Rivals in alternate comic book covers. However, as the game gained traction, it seemed like the company began to pay attention. A pivotal moment was discovering a Disney+ section featuring shows centered around Rivals characters. Now, collaborations between the comics and Rivals are becoming more common, and so far, it’s been a win-win situation for me!
There was much excitement as the Marvel Swimsuit Special made its comeback, primarily because some of these ensembles will be featured in Marvel Rivals. Known for its visually appealing female characters, albeit with some similarities, this move was largely anticipated. It’s still surprising that Marvel gave the green light to Emma Frost’s jiggling thighs throughout the special, but it’s not necessarily a negative aspect.
Fortunately, the inspiration behind these comics isn’t solely based on fan service, as they are now drawing direct inspiration from video games. For instance, a new one-shot titled “Doomed 2099” has recently been announced, featuring the future Doctor Doom facing off against the present Doom – this plotline is remarkably similar to Season 0 of Rivals, although it features a different set of characters.
It’s quite possible that Phoenix and Bishop might find themselves as rivals someday. Adding a redhead among the current blondes would certainly give the female characters a more diverse appearance.
Marvel Unlimited subscribers were thrilled to discover they’d receive free in-game skins as an added bonus. At present, only The Thing has been given one, but it’s possible that this could be the beginning of additional promotional skins for members. Moreover, there is a digital comic series exclusive to fans, which delves deeper into the game’s background and characters.

In the same vein as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s joining in on the love for Marvel Rivals. This has been ongoing ever since the game’s launch, which included some MCU character skins. It’s always great to have more, and the recent addition of a Winter Soldier skin inspired by the Thunderbolts movie is a clever touch. However, we would have appreciated a Yelena skin for Black Widow as well.
I’m hoping Marvel doesn’t let the excitement of Rivals’ success consume them too much. Fans are concerned that the rapid release of a hero every month might strain the developers. If they continue to push for more crossovers, it could lead to a backlash if they become too frequent. For now, it seems acceptable given the game’s novelty, but things can quickly change.
No matter what, it’s fantastic to observe the impact of Marvel Rivals on comics. An upcoming Emma Frost miniseries is exciting news, and I have a feeling fans will be thrilled if they can obtain her costume within the Rivals series.
