As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the upcoming release of Marvel Rivals by NetEase Games has truly piqued my interest. The latest reveal of Psylocke, or Betsy Braddock as she’s formally known, is a testament to the game’s commitment to including both mainstream and lesser-known characters from the expansive Marvel Universe.
It appears that Marvel Rivals by NetEase Games is targeting a release in December, yet the unveiling of potential playable characters continues to escalate for the game’s roster.
In addition to popular Marvel heroes such as Captain America, Hulk, and Iron Man, the game Rivals is known for featuring lesser-known characters from the comics. For instance, X-Man Magik was introduced early on, and more recently, they’ve unveiled their version of Psylocke, also known as Betsy Braddock.
Psylocke in Marvel Rivals
As a gaming enthusiast, it’s been a thrill to see sneak peeks of Psylocke pop up earlier, but the official Marvel Rivals account just unveiled her gameplay, and she’s shaping up to be a blend between Overwatch’s Genji and Sombra. Can’t wait to dive into the action!
She was abruptly taken away from her world by the Time Stream Intertwining. Now, the powerful feudal warrior known as Psylocke is set to engage in battle in Marvel Rivals!
As a devoted admirer, let me express how captivating it is to witness Sai harness her psionic abilities. She materializes an assortment of weapons, ranging from crossbows to shurikens, all while masterfully tracking down her adversaries. The gentle fluttering of a butterfly’s wings echoes through the air, signaling the final defeat of her enemies, as she brings them low with her trusty odachi.
Previously suggested previews indicated Psylocke’s teleportation skills, and it appears she possesses a dash move for swift movement across the battlefield, much like Sombra. Similar to Sombra, she can become invisible, which is among her more recent comic book abilities.
In the final analysis, it seems she’ll effortlessly maneuver among a cluster of adversaries, slicing through them individually while inflicting severe damage. Her capabilities extend beyond just melee attacks, as suggested by her array of alternative weapons such as crossbows and shurikens, but these are not observed in this particular gameplay demonstration.
Which Psylocke is This Version Based On?
Indeed, it’s true that the most widely recognized version of Psylocke is the ’90s one with her revealing one-piece and red sash. However, this new Psylocke for Marvels seems to be inspired by a more modern comic interpretation, which was introduced in the 2020s.
Artist Peach Momoko’s Demon Days presented a fresh perspective of the Marvel Universe, grounded in Japanese folklore. In this rendition, Psylocke was known as ‘Sai’, a roaming warrior, and she traversed the land accompanied by her pet wolf named “Logan”.
Have an opinion on this article? We’d love to hear it!
In the comic “Demon Days,” one of the early adversaries Sai faces is known as Orochi, the colossal serpent, a character similar to Orochimaru often seen in the Naruto series.
Despite Betsy Bradock’s original comic book origins being English, her iconic portrayal with an odachi has become deeply ingrained in her character across various adaptations. Given that Marvel Rivals is exploring the concept of the multiverse, Sai could embody the distinctive world often referred to by fans as the ‘Momo-verse’ perfectly.
X-Men Characters in Marvel Rivals
To date, Psylocke is among the X-Men characters confirmed for Rivals, with Magik, Magneto, and Storm also revealed. Although not officially part of the X-Men team, The Scarlet Witch is a mutant like her father, Magneto.
It’s clear that the game has potential for further X-related unveilings in the future. However, Psylocke and Magik, much to many gamers’ surprise, are popular choices among fans.
Marvel Rivals is set to launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on Dec. 6.
