In their recent update, NetEase has done away with the notorious “Lord Farming” exploit in Marvel Rivals, effectively erecting a significant obstacle for those players who had been leveraging the system unfairly.
In this recent update, NetEase is modifying the Hero Proficiency system in Marvel Rivals by setting a limit to the number of points players can earn during Doom Matches. For those unaware, Marvel Rivals has a proficiency system that resembles League of Legends’ Mastery system. Here, proficiency is demonstrated through “Lord Icons” that reflect how long a player has been using a particular hero. These icons significantly alter the player’s avatar, incorporating dynamic effects and vivid colors, but they are strictly for visual appeal only.
As a devoted gamer, I’ve noticed a disconnect between the amount of work I put into the game and the results I see, particularly when it comes to earning those prestigious Lord Icons. It seems like some players have been exploiting the system, often by relentlessly playing Doom Match mode to amass these icons quickly, which doesn’t seem fair to those of us who earn them through genuine gameplay.

In simpler terms, the game Doom Match functions like Marvel Rivals’ fast-paced Deathmatch mode, where the player who gets 30 kills first is declared the winner. However, unlike regular games, here players are also scoring Proficiency Points (which we could call Lord Points). This has led many players to join this game, as it offers a quicker way to accumulate these points without requiring much teamwork or coordination.
Introduce Emma Frost, the latest hero in Marvel Rivals, who has been a subject of interest among players. They have been accumulating her Lord Icon in Doom Matches, which at times negatively affected the game mode as players tended to prioritize individual actions over objectives. This lack of cooperation didn’t go unnoticed by the community, leading them to express their concerns about the system being too exploitable, a matter that could potentially have long-term repercussions.
As a dedicated player, I’ve come to realize that mastery doesn’t always equate to skill when it comes to my favorite hero, and the recent exploit has only added to the confusion. That’s why NetEase has decided to implement a limit on the Lord Proficiency Points players can earn in Doom Matches – finally putting an end to the mindless grinding!
In this setup, the changes don’t influence Competitive or Quick Play modes; these are areas where players collaborate with their team rather than acting independently as in Doom Matches. If you aspire for that Lord Icon, however, you must demonstrate your skills to earn it.
Yesterday’s update arrived together with the fresh Brain Blast game mode for Marvel Rivals, a topic we delved into thoroughly [here]. Additionally, it offers a substantial set of bug fixes and introduces stylish new skins for popular heroes such as Loki and Hela.
