Marvel Rivals: Why Emma Frost is the Perfect New Vanguard for the Game

From the moment Marvel Rivals hit the scene, I’ve admired Peni Parker holding down the fort as the lone female Vanguard. Given her time behind the Spider-Mech, it feels fitting. But now, Emma Frost is poised to join the roster, and she looks like an exceptional newcomer.

In the latest update for Season 2, it’s officially announced that Emma Frost will assume the role of the upcoming Vanguard in Marvel Rivals. Given her abilities, she seems ideally suited to take on the role of our next tank character within the game.

The White Queen

Originally portrayed as a villain in the 80s comics, Emma’s character development has been significant over time, transforming her into a pivotal figure within the X-Men team. In fact, she even assumed leadership duties from Charles Xavier at one point. Here’s where you can witness her transformation: [link]

In the latest game update, it’s been made clear that she is part of the game, yet details about her in-game skills remain undisclosed. However, it’s been hinted that she will collaborate with Magneto and Psylocke, employing her telepathic powers to generate decoy copies akin to Loki, intended to confuse the opposing team.

In the comics, Emma is predominantly portrayed as a stylish telepath, but Marvel Rivals has amplified her character to align more closely with her Vanguard role. It seems that the game developers have emphasized Emma’s physical presence, especially her powerful thighs—a feature that reflects her strength and prowess. As a devoted fan, I can’t help but admire this bold representation of Emma’s formidable nature!

One supporter commented, “Those criticizing Emma for being too large should understand that she requires a larger build to fill the role of a vanguard… it’s just logical reasoning.

Although the exact height of this character isn’t explicitly given within the game, her physical stature suggests that she might well be quite tall, similar to the imposing figure of Junker Queen from Overwatch 2, who is renowned as a ‘tall woman.’

Diamondback

In the comics, Emma’s primary talent lies in her telepathic abilities. However, she also possesses a unique power: transforming her body into unyielding diamond. This trait makes her an ideal character for a tank role. At this point, it remains unclear how this form will be employed within the game, but it may resemble the Thing’s passive ability, where she becomes immovable and stationary.

It’s worth noting that Frost was initially granted the diamond power in the comics to replace Colossus, who passed away around the same time she joined the X-Men. There have been whispers about Colossus potentially appearing in the game, but it might take some time; nevertheless, it seems appropriate for him to make an appearance on the roster since he was Wolverine’s original partner during the ‘fastball special.’

Returning to Emma, it appears this version might feature her as the leader of the X-Men, as evidenced by her exclamation, “To me, my X-Men!” in the trailer, suggesting that they won’t be focusing on a playable Professor X character in the near future. However, Frost has a friendly relationship with Magneto, so not everyone may view this as Erik acquiring an in-game rival.

In just a week’s time, we won’t have much longer to wait for a detailed glimpse into Emma’s abilities as the second season approaches.

Emma Frost joins the ranks of Marvel Rivals as the new season commences on April 11th. Currently, Marvel Rivals can be played on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers.
