As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the latest rumblings from Sony about an Agent Venom film have piqued my interest. Having watched the evolution of the Venom franchise since its inception, I can’t help but be intrigued by the prospect of a new anti-hero taking up the mantle.
As a passionate movie critic, I must say that “Venom: The Last Dance” has been creating quite the stir at the cinema, although it’s unclear if we’ll see another installment in this captivating series. For now, Tom Hardy’s mesmerizing portrayal of Eddie Brock aka Venom is indeed serving as his swan song. However, it appears that Sony Pictures might not be ready to let go of the anti-hero just yet. A tantalizing Marvel rumor floats in the air, hinting at “Agent Venom” potentially being the next chapter in this thrilling saga.
As reported by Daniel Richtman, there are rumors that Sony is planning to produce a movie centered around Agent Venom, following the conclusion of the Venom trilogy featuring Tom Hardy. However, it’s important to note that this is just a rumor for now. Given Sony’s ongoing interest in creating more Spider-Man-related films and the success of their Marvel franchise, such a move would be strategically sound. Agent Venom represents the next character to take up the Venom mantle after Eddie Brock, making him a fitting choice for the continuation of the storyline.
For those not already familiar, Agent Venom in the original stories is Flash Thompson, once a tormentor to Peter Parker, who underwent fusion with the Venom symbiote. His design is inspired by tactical gear, giving him a more streamlined look compared to Eddie Brock’s bulkier Venom persona. Introducing a fresh character as this anti-hero might bring some much-needed innovation to the franchise. Additionally, considering Sony’s ongoing contemplation of potential Spider-Man spinoff concepts, this could be a strategic move.
The Future of Sony Spider-Man Universe is Murky
In the upcoming release of “Kraven the Hunter,” Sony is determined to keep expanding their lineup of Spider-Man-connected Marvel movies. Although “Madame Web” didn’t fare well, the success of the “Venom” trilogy demonstrates that there is a viable niche within the Marvel universe. Despite numerous setbacks, it appears that “Silver Sable” is still in development limbo, along with additional installments in the animated “Spider-Verse” series. On the TV front, a Silk-centered show was terminated this year, but filming for the Nicholas Cage-led “Spider Noir” series began last month. The Sony-Marvel partnership remains solid, as “Spider-Man 4 starring Tom Holland is officially in development for filming next year.
Despite Tom Hardy’s assertion that he has finished with Venom following “The Last Dance”, fans remain optimistic about a collaboration or confrontation with Holland’s Spider-Man. The latest speculation for the fourth MCU installment hints at Peter Parker teaming up with another Marvel hero, but many speculate that Venom could be this unnamed character. However, all signs suggest Hardy is done with the role. Yet, there’s a possibility he might reappear in “Avengers: Secret Wars” given Venom’s unique knowledge of the multiverse. For now, fans can catch “Venom: The Last Dance” in theaters before “Kraven” takes over in December.
