As a hardcore Marvel fan and avid gamer of the last decade, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear that Joe and Anthony Russo are returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) not just for one but the next two Avengers movies! Their direction has been instrumental in creating some of the most iconic and successful Marvel films to date.
Joe and Anthony Russo are assembling a team — once again.
I’ve heard some exciting news as a fan! It seems that the Russo Bros. are in early discussions with Marvel Studios about directing not only one but the next two Avengers films according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter.
The studio’s long and pressure-filled hunt for directors to manage the fifth and sixth “Avengers” films has come to an end with the hiring decision. Several candidates were under consideration, including Shawn Levy, known for helming both “Deadpool” and “Wolverine.” According to insiders, negotiations are just beginning.
The move signifies a return for The Russos to the film industry after making a transition from television sitcoms like “Arrested Development” and “Community” to blockbuster movies over a decade ago, starting with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014). In their career with Marvel, they have directed four highly successful films, including “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). Together, these Marvel productions earned an impressive revenue of $6.681 billion, with “Endgame” ranking as the second highest-grossing movie worldwide, bringing in $2.79 billion.
Since then, their AGBO label has made them major producers, with hits like “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which won Best Picture, and pricier projects such as Amazon’s “Citadel” and Netflix’s “Extraction” under their belt. As directors, after finding success in the Marvel universe, they shifted to streaming titles that didn’t quite match the critical acclaim or cultural impact of their Marvel projects. They helmed Apple TV+ film “Cherry” with Tom Holland (2021) and Netflix’s high-budget action movie “The Gray Man” (2022). Up next for them is directing a sci-fi adventure titled “The Electric State” for Netflix.
I used to be excited about the upcoming fifth Avengers movie, titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” where Jonathan Majors was set to play the villainous role of Kang, a time-traveling antagonist. But then, things took an unexpected turn when Majors was convicted of assault and harassment charges in December. With this development, Marvel decided to part ways with him, leaving the project in limbo.
The sixth Avengers movie is titled “Secret Wars,” a storyline the Russo brothers have expressed interest in bringing to life for quite some time. In the original 1980s comic book series, an omnipotent adversary named the Beyonder caused Marvel’s heroes and villains to clash on a planet called Battleworld. The 2015 revival marked the conclusion of writer Jonathan Hickman’s multiverse narrative, which has already incorporated some references in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (2022). In Hickman’s “Secret Wars,” all Marvel multiverses are annihilated, leaving remnants that inhabit a solitary planet governed by the villain Doctor Doom.
Avengers 5 is set for May 1, 2026 and Secret Wars is set for May 7, 2027.
The Russo Bros. are repped by CAA.
