Marvel TV Exec Confirms Nova Series in Development, Addresses MCU's Cosmic Future

As a lifelong Marvel fan who’s been following the cosmic adventures of Nova since his debut in 1976, I couldn’t be more thrilled to see this interstellar hero finally joining the MCU! The fact that they’re taking their time to get it right, just like they did with the Guardians of the Galaxy, is a testament to Marvel Studios’ commitment to quality storytelling.

The character Nova, initially introduced by writer Marv Wolfman and artist John Buscema in The Man Called Nova #1 back in September 1976, is set to make its appearance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Details regarding both the upcoming Disney+ series and the character itself are becoming clearer. This teenage superhero was part of an intergalactic cosmic police force known as the Nova Corps. Hints about Nova’s inclusion in the MCU can be traced back to 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which showcased the Nova Corps prominently, and further groundwork was laid for Nova’s origin story with Thanos destroying Xandar and the Nova Corps in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War

Back in 2022, there were initial whispers about a new television series called “Nova”. It seems that since then, things have been moving forward. During a recent interview promoting the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe show “Agatha All Along”, Brad Winderbaum, who is the head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, shared some insights about the development and refining process for “Nova”

Currently, Nova is being worked on actively… I’ll put it this way: We’re creating more than we’re producing at the moment. This is an aspect of the new Marvel universe, but let’s discuss Nova because there’s always a lot of enthusiasm around it at Marvel. We’re eager to do it justice. However, it’s still in development. We have several projects in progress, and we won’t launch anything until we’re satisfied with a pilot episode and the overall storyline (or “bible”). Therefore, Nova is currently under development

In terms of its thematic approach and otherworldly narratives within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the upcoming series Nova shares similarities with the acclaimed sci-fi shows Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. These series are renowned for addressing complex themes such as race, religion, and human relationships while maintaining a certain realism. This is evident in various cosmic MCU tales, like that of Captain Marvel, which echoes elements from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Battlestar Galactica through its portrayal of the Skrulls as a persecuted alien race on the run from the Kree Empire’s imperial forces. As stated by Winderbaum, this is the direction they are aiming for with Nova

“I must admit, the recent innovations on Star Trek have left a profound impact on me. I find their series truly remarkable. This is why we brought Terry Matalas aboard for Vision Quest. However, the Nova project in progress now is an extraordinary ensemble production. While I can’t reveal much, it boasts a captivating group of characters that draw comparisons to Trek and Battlestar Galactica. Yet, it also echoes the intensity of the Richard Rider comics world and embodies all its passion.”

Winderbaum’s remark, “‘We produce more than we release; this is the evolving Marvel,’” hints at the future trajectory of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and other projects in progression. During the reign of Disney CEO Bob Chapek, the emphasis on streaming as a key component of the company’s future prompted Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm to generate more content, even when some announcements were premature, such as during the 2020 Disney Investor Day call. In 2021, Marvel Studios delivered five Disney+ series alongside four feature films, while 2022 witnessed three Disney+ original series, three movies, and two holiday specials. While many fans appreciated the abundance of MCU content, it was overpowering for others

By November 2022, Bob Iger came back to Disney, taking over from Bob Chapek and steering the company towards a fresh path. While 2023 was a challenging year for Disney at the box office, the changes initiated by Iger started becoming apparent in 2024. Marvel Studios has unveiled four projects so far: one movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, along with three television series, including Echo, X-Men ’97, and Agatha All Along. As for future film announcements, there have been no major updates beyond 2025, except for the title change of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to Avengers: Doomsday. The strategy appears to be focusing on already announced projects and revealing a new one only when it’s ready. As for television series, it looks like there will be three more entries, with two live-action series, Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart, and possibly one animated series, either X-Men ’97 Season 2, What If…? Season 3, or Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

It’s understandable why it seems like there are numerous whispers about upcoming Marvel productions, ranging from a potential sequel to Shang-Chi, The Young Avengers, speculated second seasons of Moon Knight and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, among others. Similar to the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Marvel Studios is keeping quiet about their ongoing projects until they’re ready to reveal them, as was the case with movies like Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy which were in development for years prior to being announced. Kevin Feige has already acknowledged that Nova is approximately three to four years away, and it’s expected to make its debut during whatever Marvel intends to follow after the Multiverse Saga
