Each year brings a fresh season for numerous esports, and for enthusiasts of fighting games, the EVO Championships serve as a stage where top contenders face off against each other, ultimately crowning champions in various fighting game genres. This year at the EVO Championships, Marvel vs Capcom fans can look forward to revisiting their favorite title, Marvel vs Capcom 2.
A sneak peek of a YouTube thumbnail, posted by @Knoebelbroet on X, hinted that the upcoming 2025 EVO Championships will feature eight games in total, with Marvel vs. Capcom 2 being one of them alongside titles like Tekken 8, Street Fighter 6, and Mortal Kombat 1.
The leaked picture additionally disclosed the tournament timeline, running for three consecutive days from the 1st to the 3rd of August, 2025, right in Las Vegas.
Last year saw the reintroduction of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 through the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, making it playable on contemporary gaming platforms. This compilation also offered classic games like X-Men: Children of the Atom and X-Men vs. Street Fighter.
For a considerable time now, numerous gaming enthusiasts have eagerly anticipated the revival of these timeless games on contemporary consoles. Notably, EVO Champion Justin Wong, often recognized as Wazzler, has almost unchallenged mastery over most titles across every platform. This is such that many players opt to forfeit their ranked matches when they face him.
The EVO Championships stand out in a unique way. It gathers the top-tier players globally, making the competition significantly more challenging than typical ranked matches in the public domain.
As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I find myself taken aback by the inclusion of Under Night In-Birth and Mortal Kombat 1 on the list of games for this year. Conversely, my heart sinks for the Virtua Fighter fans, knowing that their beloved series will not be featured in EVO this year.
Despite the fact that esports is currently experiencing unprecedented growth due to events like the EVO Championships and the Esports World Cup, not every fighting game will get a spot on the international stage.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2, a game cherished by numerous generations, undeniably holds a place among the most prestigious esports arenas globally.
